Problem is now solved.
Source of trouble turned out to be an obscure setting in the nVidia sound mixer.

Suddenly the sound out of my speakers is like it's coming from the bottom of a deep well, with a strong echo effect.
I don't know what caused it. It seem to have changed spontaneously, with no trigger event,. There hasn't been any bios flashing or driver updating or anything else that I can think of to cause the sudden change in sound.
I've exhausted my knowledge but can't return sound to normal. Weird.
Anybody have ideas how I can undo this?
mobo: DFI nForce4 UT Ultra-D
cpu: AMD Athlon 3200+ Winchester core
Windows XP Pro SP2, fully updated
nVidia version 6.70 drivers
All ideas appreciated! Thank you.
