My sound sucks :(

I just got my new rig: A64 2800+, Epox 8KDA3J. The mobo has onboard Realtek AC 97 audio. It sounds worse than my 6 year old compaq's onboard sound. There is like no bass and the volume is quiet when I set it to maximum. The speakers are supposed to connect to the line out hole, right? And is there any way to make them louder? I turned the volume all the way up from the windows volume control.

yes, onboard sound generally suckz.

list the "holes" available and maybe I can help on the hook-up

even a $20 SoundBlaster is probably going to give you an improvment (IMHO)

but its worse than my 6yr old comp? 😕
i have: line in, line out, mic, side stereo in, rear stereo in, center and subwoofer.
and also why is it so quiet?

It is quiet because you need to use amplified speakers. It's a line out, not speaker out.

If it sounds bad, that really is normal. Most manufacturers don't pay attention to sound quality, nor interference. Get a Chaintech AV710 and be done.

I think you have your INs and OUTs confused.

usually, if you only have 2 speakers, they are connected to the front(?) stereo OUT jacks.

(maybe it's a good time to read that motherboard operation manual)

The sound on my board wasnt bad at all. It sounded pretty good actually. I have a Santa Cruz now though, friend sold it to me for $15. The Santa Cruz sure does sound better though 😛.

Another vote for the Chaintech av710, $25 for superb sound quality. You have to make sure you set it up to use the proper DAC though, it's a 7.1 channel card but only 1 DAC (2 channels) is any good, and it's not the one used by default for 2 channel output. More on that at head-fi.org.
