My Sound Magically disappears????

This issue has me confused... the primary issue is that I have no sound when the computer is up and running. HOWEVER when the Windows XP screen at the startup is going the sound works fine... at the desktop about a minute after startup I get this error.

First Error

I have gotten things like winamp to play for about a minute or two.. even during this error... BUT the sound eventually goes blank and I get these errors when trying to play winamp or trying to adjust the sound icon in the task bar:

Errors once sound mysteriously goes out

Its frustrating having no sound.. any ideas to get it back on track? all I know that I did that may have caused this issue was to try to adjust the volume (this was before the errors occured) and I right clicked on the speaker icon in the task bar.. I right clicked Adjust vol controls... but then I clicked cancel... the speaker icon disappeared and the sound has had these errors since.

I did try a system restore to a couple days before the error started... It apparantly hasnt helped it any.

Important Specs:
WinXP SP2
MSI K7T Turbo2 MoBo (onboard sound) (VIA KT133a chipset) (directsound AC97 audio)
AMD Athlon 1800+ CPU (1.53)
768MB Ram

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated... thanks

plaidfro,

Have you tried uninstalling the audio drivers and re-installing them (from the MSI mobo CD)? And do you have on-board audio selected in the BIOS?
