I can prolly give you a pretty good idea of repair cost if you can post some details - Like model # for one, and chassis number if possible, manufacture date.

From what you describe, try and see if bumping/jarring the set will affect your whistling sound - chances are it is either a noisy flyback/yoke. These two operate at about 15.75kHz, which is around the upper range of human hearing - very annoying indeed. The flyback is "packed" with a metal spring clip to keep it from vibrating/ringing, if this comes loose, or the flyback shifts at all - boom you've got a squeal. It is a pretty big job to re-pack a flyback in the house. Assuming this is a flyback problem and not in the switching powersupply - I charge between $78 - $118 for a repair like to be made same day on the spot.

Is $118 worth it to save you the cost of a new set? I think so.
you charge $78 - $118 for a hot glue job on a FBT and/or yoke control coils? :|
he isright about where the "squeal" is coming from though,I'd charge $50 but then again, I wouldn't tell you how easy it is to fix:evil: 😉

You'd think after all these years the old problem of noidy flybacks or yolks, cap's etc would be resolved. The problem is worse yet with large crt's. And some mfgrs aren't making spares cause the sets are so trashy they aren't worth fixing (Jensen 20" flat screen I couldn't get a part for..only paid 129.95 for it at costco) The Jensen had a great pic.and the only set I could find with a 20"screen and digital colmb filter..so I returned it to costco and got a refund...

I have a 3 year old Sony 35" TV (the black trinitron model)... Occationally (more often than not lately), the TV makes a fairly loud 'whistling' noise... The sound is not coming from the speakers, seems to be coming from somewhere near the top of the unit...

Any ideas? Is this sucker dying??

lol my sony 27" tv has been doing that for over 4 years now. I can't afford a new tv right now 🙁 so I just learned to live with it.

Dude, keep in mind, i charge $45 to walk in the door. Hot glue will not resolve his problem in the long term. If the yoke is rattling it needs to be opened and filled with RTV silicon sealant. This is not a simple job as the set must be re-converged after the yoke is removed. For the flyback , the flyback has to be removed from the PCB and re-seated (lots of soldering). Takes about an hour to do.

Argh....!!!

Its really bad right now, almost giving me a headache..... 🙁

Good luck. My 2 YO $2700 36XBR400 died on me recently and Sony wouldn't do jack sh!t and denied there were any problems with the TV despite tons of documented issues with it online.

MOST of the time its a control coil attached to the yoke(hot glue/RTV once they set they will have the same affect) as for the FBT,if it takes you an hour to desolder, glue and resolder you need to "bone-up" on your soldering skills.unsoldering 8-12 pins and popping loose the FBT takes me 10 min.glue 5 min, and reinstall and test another 10.but a TV shop wont tell you that. They will still charge the "hour". I know, I've worked for TV shops from '84-'98
