My Sony G520P 21" CRT vs. Dell 2001FP LCD

I recently bought my first LCD monitor, the Dell 2001FP 20.1" and set it up next to my Sony G520P 21" CRT,I've always thought CRT was king and this Sony G520P has a kickass picture (alittle over 1 year old) but after 4 days of using this 2001FP and doing a lot of side by side comparisons (running both monitors in clone mode on a 6800 GT) the LCD simply wins in most categories, actualy the only area the CRT looked better in was black retention, when playing Movies or Doom 3 the CRT was able to keep the dark areas pitch black while the LCD had a brighter black ,yet still looked good ,any other games I tried looked fantastic on the 2001FP.

The one part I was most worried about is motion blur with LCDs but the 2001FP has very little blur ,if I move my mouse pointer rapidly across the screen you can tell the CRT is able to keep up better but overall its a non-issue,especially during gaming wich was my priority.

Another concern was LCD's native resolution but I was happy to find the 2001FP scales down very well, I'm used to running 1600x1200 on my CRT with most games (P4 2.8C @ 3.3ghz / 1gb ram) but even games that I tried at 1280x1024 the 2001fp still looked great.

After viewing text (webpages / forums etc.) for extended periods on the LCD and then looking over at the CRT it actualy makes the CRT look slightly out of focus (Even tho its not) Im very impressed with the detail / sharpness an LCD offers, for example the differance is easily noticable when comparing the quicklaunch icons located on the taskbar, you can easily make out all of the details on the LCD without a hint of blur.

Eye strain is also not an issue for me , I dont wear glasses and even tho the LCD is VERY bright (brighter than the CRT) after reading text all day @ 1600x1200 my eyes feel fine.

Its also nice looking at a screen thats perfectly focused corner to corner and has perfect geometry.

Anyhow Im sure most already know the greatness this monitor offers I just wanted to share my thoughts, I used to be one of those guys that would say "CRT 4 Life!, F$#% LCDs native resolutions, motion blur etc. blah!" Im still not convienced LCD is better as an HDTV mainly because of its black retention.. however I know some LCD's are better than others in this area, But as a PC / Gaming monitor I simply cant go back to CRT anymore.

Glad you're happy with the monitor. 🙂

I had (somewhat briefly) owned the highest-end 22" NEC CRT there was (the FP2141SB-BK), and even after getting it replaced, I just didn't like it that much. Focus/convergence wasn't that great, geometry was always a bit off, etc. So I ended up replacing it with a 2005FPW, and I'd never go back to a CRT now. I too had been a "CRT fanboy", mainly concerned with response times/motion blur on LCD's, but it's a total non-issue. CRT's still have the edge (especially with ultra-high refresh rates like the one I had), but LCD's are perfectly fine too.

I  my monitor. 😀

I had a 2001FP before I got my 2405FPW. It was great. I still use one from time to time at my parents and still really like the 2001.

lol...glad to hear those people are convertible, per se. it's like they pray to electron guns and cathode ray tubes every day. 😉

my old eMachines 17" CRT is a big hunk of glass that has broken display electronics. it worked until 7 months later (after I sat it down to power on my LCD) when I tried turning it on...I just wanted to compare motion blur. it's so ironic I'd have to risk my life (discharging the CRT) to save the damn piece of crap, hahahahaha. I also had 2 identical KDS 17" CRTs. One had broken electronics and one had a f***ed tube. Somehow my dad put the good electronics in the good tube one and finally got it to work. Then my dad got an LCD also shortly thereafter. 😉

I got my LCD 7 months ago and just found the ideal color settings a week or so ago. Now I love it...I'll be buying a 2001FP in the near future almost certainly, well maybe. I'm sure 8-bit colors will look better than my current 6-bit, I do want faster response time though.

I am eagerly awaiting SEDs though.

Can I have your desktop wallpaper? I want to see how it looks on my LCD. (I think) I know what's it "supposed" to look like...it's nature.

I went from a 19" CRT (not crap, but not high-end either) to a 21" LCD (not Dell, they didn't have any good deals on when I needed to get the monitor). On LCD vs. CRT in general, CRTs still have the advantage of a larger gamut over many LCDs, but I was surprised that my LCD works as well as it has for photo editing (I'm just advanced amateur though, a prepress professional would want a CRT or maybe an Eizo CG220). The main reason I was "forced" to upgrade, though, was for the space-saving aspect; uniform clarity of text (which I expect to be very important for the next four years in college) is also nice to have.

text is perfectly sharp on lcd's and they do not flicker even at 60 hz. on a crt 60 hz is unbearable. i have a sony sdm-hs73 17 inch lcd and it is superior (although has only a 16 ms response time). it was 500 bucks at the time so i figured it was good, sony makes some of the best monitors. comparable to dells.

I come down the exact opposite of the OP, I have a NEC FE991and I love it but I decided to try LCDs so I borrowed my friends Dell 2001 while his computer was down (He RMAed his 6800GT and I used his moniter until he got his video card back). I couldn't stand the lack of blackand the ghosting/motion blur (I have very sensetive eyes) and after about a week of use I had come to the conclution that my NEC FE991 was far superior, however I know lots of people who have had the same experience as the OP, this all just comes down to a matter of personal preference.

i am OC so i can't use a CRT. they are totally OC unfriendly. how can you stand that ghosting on a CRT? the image is like a second behind and gives off this ghost trail when moving. also white and bright tihngs on a dark background emit a ghostly glow on a crt. lcds DO NOT HAVE GHOSTING!!!! they have motion blur, where the edgs of objects are fuzzy, as opposed to crts having sharp but having ghost trails. although the black backlight problem is a bit annoying, though i still prefer lcd to crt for many other reasons.

My LCD has minor ghosting (scrolling smoothly with light text on a black background shows it easily), but I always wondered what this furor was about, when I could see faint trails behind my mouse pointer on black on my CRT. 😕
