My son's job. . . ( he is 12). . .

So, the local paper in town is a once weekly small town affair. They have let local boys sell the paper for them for ages. The way it works, you go to the paper, and you buy a lot of papers. You pay a quarter for them (non-refundable), and you get as many as you think you can sell for 50 cents.

You keep the profit.

Yesterday, I took my son down at opening time and fronted him 15 bucks for 60 papers. He had them sold by 2 pm. He took 15 dollars and went and bought another 60 papers - had them sold by 4 pm. Not to press his luck, he bought 20 more and had them sold by 5. So he cleared 35$ (after repaying me).

Not to shabby for a kid his age. Too bad he can't do that every day, I could charge him rent, hahah. . .

hmm... these 'papers' sound sketchy. what kind of paper sells like hotcakes?

i conclude - 'papers' = pornography, and the demand for them is a result of the relatively discreet door-to-door service by an individual with a near 0% chance of being law enforcement, or someone in an esteemed position within a religion (in the event someone would be intimidated by a cop or priest selling porn)

😛

It is a once a week newspaper. It sells cause it literally is it around here.

The only time I was truly rich in my life was when I was a paperboy in the late 60's. I cleared roughly $40 per week net, and if I spent $10 on stuff, it was a big spending week. I put myself through college, and the paper route had a lot to do with that.

At one point, I really jacked up my income by ordering extra papers and selling them at a nearby busy intersection. I had to stop because it PO'd my routeman, who had an honor box at that corner.

Oh yeah my first job was a paper route when I was about 11, for the amount of money I made, and the time I spent on it, it ended up being about 8 bucks an hour. Which for a 11 year old was GREAT! Course I only spent about an hour on it a day, so it wasn't that much, but still at 11 it was a fortune.

Tell him that if he starts off with a larger lot initially, he won't have to use his time to go back and forth to get more papers.

When was "opening time". If opening time was noon, $35 in 5 hours is decent. If opening time was 6 am, then $3.18 an hour is crappy.

However, then he (potentially) has to eat the initial outlay if they're just not selling well that day...

You can't win if you don't take risks.

I submit the opportunity cost does not justify the risk, in this case. 🙂

Since he sold 180 papers that day, he can buy 120 papers at first instead of just 60.
