My son tore half the keys off our laptop computer...

The computer is a PIII 600MHz with 320MB RAM and Win2k Pro. It works fine and we really only use it for email and surfing the web (I play AOE II on it every once in a great while, a task which really taxes this computer I might add).

Anyway, some of the clips that hold the keys on are broken and I don't have the patience to reinstall all the keys. I guess I could just buy a new keypad for it. Any ideas where to get one? Or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new computer?

This is a Toshiba BTW.

Update: I picked up a freebie keyboard I from a non-working laptop at work, installed it a few minutes ago and it works perfectly!

new keyboard. THe one you have won't be worth sh!t unless you get that fixed. Then, it isn't half bad for a laptop.

Spend the money on ritalin instead?

But seriously, that's a nice enough laptop to be worth spending $50-75 to fix.

He's 3. If he was 7 I would be pretty pissed off.

Apparently he was banging on it with something and that's what broke the keys off. My wife wasn't paying attention at the time so she didn't catch it until he had broken about 10 keys. I'm more pissed at her than him actually.

Also, I think I may have a replacement from work. We happened to have an old Toshiba laptop with the keyboard intact so I'm going to try that tonight! FREEEEEEBIE!!!!! :D

do you have the money for a new laptop? cause it seems like an upgrade should be coming your way anyway. get a new keyboard and sell the laptop, then buy a new one. that is, if u have the money

Thumbs up to Jules' kid!

I'd take the trouble to fix it. I'd at least try and locate replacement parts for a decent price. Just couldn't bring myself to bale on something that expensive!

LOL, my 2 year old ripped 3/4 of the keys off my wifes dell laptop. Luckily nothing was broken except for he ripped some rubber nipples off. The only thing now is that the space bar is alittle hit and miss. Took me about an hours getting the thing back together.

Yeah, my son took the F key off a few months ago and it was a bitch getting it back on and it never quite felt the same after. He bent the crap out of one of the retaining clips. The new keypad is practically brand new. I think someone dropped the laptop I cannibalized this keypad from and messed it all up. The keypad was just sitting in a cabinet. 3 minutes and I had it installed and I was up and running. Took me longer to find a screwdriver that would fit the tiny screws they use in laptops than it took me to install it.

Anyway, thank god IT guys are a bunch of packrats; they never throw anything away!!!

Funny side note: I stopped by Fry's today to look at laptops and the goon there (with horrible god awful stinky breath-dude, you need a fvcking tic tac or something 'cause your breath stinks!!!!) was going on and on about pricing a replacement keyboard and then paying $40 to have someone install it... Does he just assume everyone who comes in there to look at a computer is a complete idiot?

Sounds like a case for Ren and Stimpy.
