My son may have Hydrocephalus

This is a condition where fluid builds up on the brain. The cure is to put a shunt/drain in the brain and run it down to the kidneys. Whiule it can be life threatening, his is not a serious condition at this point. He is healthy, happy and alert. The procedure is pretty common, and easily performed. We are taking him to Scottish Rite next Tuesday for a final surgical consult. I hope that he does not have to face surgery, no 7 month old should have to go under the knife, especially when he is so healthy.

Please pray for my son, as he is my life right now.

Wow... hope everything goes ok. Keep us posted. Is this supposed to be a one-time surgery or will there need to be further checkups and fixes to more complications?

Sorry to hear about this Ulfwald. 🙁 I don't normally pray, but I'll definitely put in a word with the man upstairs on your son's behalf.

I have two young children and I can't even begin to imagine what you are going thru.

Best wishes to your son and your entire family.

HE may have to have additional shunts put in as he grows.

If managed properly, he will be able to do whatever he wants to do, just the fact that I spent the first 7 years of my life in and out of hospitals make me dread him even going near a doctor.

But on a good note, the neuro surgeon who is looking after him has been referred to as the best in the business, many staffers at Scottish Rite refer tohim as GOD, not because of his superior attitude, but because he is a brilliant surgeon and also caters to kids, he treats them as patients, not as just another case.

i had that same condition when i was born. It cleared up on its own the week before my surgery. Never got a good explanation.

Scott, very sorry to hear this 🙁

If you need anything, please do not be afraid to ask.

My sister adopted an 18 month old from the Phillipines with hydrocephalus (and a shunt that had been put in). Little Josh is the most adorable, active kid you'd ever hope to meet. He's an absolute joy and in every way appears perfectly healthy.

My prayers are with you and your family. May your son be just like Josh! 🙂

Hope that all goes well for him, either way. If he does have it then good that they detected it now instead of later.. recall reading of a case where a little girl w/the condition went undiagnosed & the pressure did cause some problems before a nurse recognized what the underlying problem really was & alerted the family.

I'm really sorry to hear about your son. I'll definitely keep him and your family in my prayers. As you know, I had a brain tumor. Before we found that out, I had hydrocephalus. Instead of a shunt, I received an Ommaya Reservoir to take care of it. I've had no problems whatsoever with it. I was only the 7th person at the particular hospital to receive it. I pray all goes well. Keep us updated.
