my sociology paper - rant =)

aiite ... so i'm writing this paper for sociology. we're supposed to respectfully interview someone of a different social class, approximately our age, who doesn't attend a four year institution (jc, big college or whatnot) to find out how their social class, family, gender, ethnicity ... how all of that affected how they became. (no family members)

finding someone is the most difficult part. it rules out all of my family (whom will freely talk about who they are because i am related to them), my college friends ('cause theyre in college), and all of my high school friends. i understand how this assignment makes us go out of our comfort zone and talk to people ... but i think that interviewing a complete stranger only because theyre of a lower social class and because they didn't go to college is almost rather arrogant. dont want to come off that way.

yea. thats my rant. the only reason i've been neffin' all night is cuz i dont want to start this blasted paper. =)

My school had closed their sociology department years ago. Arrogance. Closest we've got is Cultural Anthropology.

It must be nice to know that you are a member of the highest possible social class, since you have determined that everyone who is in a different social class than you is from a lower one.

To me it does seem kind of arrogant, it seems like your school is just reinforcing social stereotypes. When you think about it, the whole assignment sounds asinine. The way you put makes it sound like you?re going out to study monkeys instead of someone who didn?t go to college.:disgust:

far from it. sorry didn't mean to come across it that way. the implication was that we weren't to interview "the success story" or what not ... but more along the lines of how society affects how you turn out. when you're disallowed to interview someone that didn't go to college ... that drastically cuts down your options about people you can interview.

think what the purpose of the paper is saying is that even though we're all masters of our own destiny, society still influences our capabilities to act on them.

i still do think it's difficult to interview someone simply on the basis of ... gee looks like you didnt' go to college. its not arrogance ... its the nature of the assignment. i dont agree with it at all

You said in the original post "someone who doesnt attend a four year institution" making it sound like not currently in college.

You can actually find many people, some successful, some not so successful who didnt attend college, not everyone is ashamed of not having a 4 year degree( me being one.) My wife has a 4 year degree, and I make about 4 times what she does per year in salary, but she loves her job, mine is just OK.

Once you actually start searching, you will be surprised at the number of people who dont have a 4 year degree, but still live nicely, and might even be smarter than some people who did attend college.

didn't have any intention of offending anyone. im sorry if i offended you. thats kind of what makes this assignment a little difficult. i dont want to seem condescending to anyone. man, everyone deserves respect. in a college town its going to be difficult to find someone that doesnt go to college my age that wont be offended if i ask them. and what do you do anyway, just walk up to somebody and ask them if they didn't go to college? agh. my apologies once again.

would you like to be interviewed? =)

How does society influence someone?s capabilities? It sound like the typical socialist twaddle taught in most colleges today. If you?re the master of your own destiny, you wont let society affect how you live. 😉

it seems very anti-American. but thats what the liberals here like to teach ... that we still live in a racist society. to some degree i think its true ... but i think most people have matured past placing worth on someone's education, ethnicity, or background ... its just wrong. thats why this assignment is wrong.

Why does it have to be someone your own age?

Just plop down in the local coffee shop, strike up a conversation with a few people. Maybe find an older person, they love to talk to people. Go the the local nursing home, you will have old folks standing in line to talk to you. 🙂

it would indeed make it a lot easier. the reason it has to be someone of approximately the same age is because its supposed to be a comparative sociobiography. im writing about myself and about whoever i interview. it makes the paper all the more difficult 'cause we're interviewing our peers, in a sense

<< Oops, just saw that you lived in Berkley..........that explains most of it 😉 >>

hahahahaha ... whats that supposed to mean? the students aren't as liberal as most people think. we aren't the students of the 1960-70's anymore

If you live in Berkley and are only kind of liberal, that means you are practically a socialist to everyone who lives in the middle of the country. 🙂

Now I know why you got the assignment. Most people from Berkley actually do look upon the rest of society like monkeys. 😉
