It sounds like you need to go higher than your teacher to get this straightened out. Talk to the principal about it. Better yet, send the principal an email with your side of the story and offer to make an appointment to meet with her and the teacher to talk about it - that way you don't come across as a lazy whiner because you're offering to talk about it face to face.

Fraggable for elite :). Thanks for the advice, I'll call her tomorrow.

You said you like working with your hands. Why don't you go to a vocational school after HS (assuming you graduate :p) and learn a trade? Welders, etc, are in high demand and can actually make a tidy sum.

I said I didn't mind that, but I thinking welding'd be awesome.

Teachers, as with most people in life, expect the effort even if the end result isn't necessary. In this case, you do not benefit from going through the firedrill of applying to a college, but it is an important lesson that the teacher feels everyone should have experience doing. You simply opting out of it, is a failing grade. You doing it, knowing full well you aren't going anywhere, is a passing grade. Pretty simple. The experience you'd gain from going through the steps would help you later in life if you finally decided to go. If anything, his assignment has got you thinking about a subject that you might be trying to avoid.

This is where you're wrong. He said he'd talk to the principal, but I don't expect him to pass me. However, for the slim, slim chance he WILL, is anyone here a programmer and willing to answer a few questions? :)

EDIT: I filled in that I was going to be a computer programmer. For the 0.0000001% chance he changes his mind (he's really stubborn), any computer programmers care to give me an interview?

Just because mommy and daddy can't afford it doesn't mean you can't go to college. There are plenty of ways you can go to college if you want to. "We" don't have to be able to afford it, you need to want it badly enough to figure out how to do it on your own.

Okay, like what? A scolarship won't work, you have to be REALLY REALLY SMART. Loans don't work either, the governement has some dumb requirements for loans for people that are (still) in school. I was thinking of joining the military and coming home with a big pile of money so I could go to college, but you've got a pretty big chance that'll either kill me or leave me scarred for life. But, seriously, if you've got other suggestions, please tell them. I'd love to go to college.

Work and live like a pauper for 2 years to get your associates degree. Then get a descent job and some certifications to make more money or decide to live like a pauper for another two years and complete a four year degree at a college or university. If you get the 4year degree, you can easily become a teaching assistant and live like a pauper for another 2years while you get your masters or live below the poverty line for 4-5years while you get your doctorate.

Sigh. I didn't say I don't WANT a loan, I'm saying I don't qualify for a loan, because there's stupid mandates and rules as to how much you can loan, when you have to pay it back, interest rate etc. etc. if you're (still) in school.

Worst case scenario is that you get a loan and have to pay interest payments (which are very affordable). I don't know where you live, but move to Springfield, MO. Cost of living is dirt cheap and you can make good money working at one of the many restaurants in town waiting tables. Go to Ozarks Technical College and get your associates for next to nothing in the grand scheme of things. If you plan your finances out well, you won't even have to get any loans.

Not being able to afford college is the biggest load of tripe I've ever heard. Everyone I know who's parents made less than 50k a year combined got financial aid to attend the institution they were going to. None of it was merit based, all need based. Assuming you can get into a couple schools, odds are you will get a good financial aid offer. And if you don't... well, no harm in applying right? You can even get your school to spot you the application fee.

Anyways, the excuse "No money." is totally un-usable in the present day college system. If you want to go to college, in todays world you CAN, regardless of your situation.

Sure. PM me any questions you have. I went to college for CS, but college really only helps you get a job. I learned very little in college that I apply to my daily life.

I still dont understand the problem with the ASSIGNMENT. All discussion about affording college or not, loans or not asside, I still dont get why you cant do the assignment. So you need to apply for someplace. Fine, go apply. Even if they accept you, you aren't obligated to go.

Glad you seem to know how the whole university system in the Netherlands works. Quit yapping like a retarded mongoose.

I'm doing it all myself. Don't say it isn't possible. Scholarship comes from fiscal need. I happen to have a shiton of that. I had ~1/2 paid off through grants, and the other half is through more loans and working a student job. No parental help. It is easily possible if you want to do it.

EDIT: Ahh, Netherlands. Take out loans from the bank for community college (if you really do wnat to go to college). Im sure they ahve some sort of lower interest loans for students.

Do the assignment. If he fails you regardless, you have a legitimate case for discrimination (not everybody can afford to go to college, etc.) and his decision will be overthrown.

Safeway, how much exactly do you know about the Dutch education system? State college? Community college? What the heck are you babbling about? He's not in the states.

I'm a programmer too. I've only been doing it for a year and I'm entry level out of college. But I might be able to answer some questions for you too if you want.

The Netherlands. There's lots of dumb rules.

Given the above I got to think your chances of getting killed are about the same as your chances of getting killed in an auto accident. This is not meant to be a slam against the Netherlands armed forces but if they are involved in any kind of action anywhere I have not heard of it.
