My - so far unsuccessful - quest for a working divx/xvid codec pack

Yeah, I thought I could share this with you.

Background: I have a large number of .avi files, encoded in various formats, fom divx 3.11 to xvid and so on...

My previous setup worked nicely, and I could see them all, even the odd ones.

But since I changed my machine, I'll be damned if I can get things to work anymore.

Mind you, I'm still on Windows 200 Pro, the same operating system I used on the old machine and on the - currently working - secondary computer, and the installation order is the same one I followed in the past with success.

So here goes: I install PowerDVD, then install divx 3.11, then divx 5.0, then Tsunami Codec Pack 3.9.3.

I can't see half the files... so I uninstall divx... put in ffdshow... everything's screwed up, all the files that are still played are a blockfest ... remove ffdshow, install xvid... bollocks... uninstall everything EXCEPT Tsunami...

Lo and behold, Tsunami plays everything I try (blockiness notwithstanding)... until I try an xvid-encoded file. and it doesn't work...

In desperation, I get rid of tsunami and install K-lite Codec pack full (2.2.4, if I'm not mistaken)... Bad move, nothing works. I get rid of K-lite as well...

And now, my .vob files (because I'm making some DVDs, too) cannot be read by either Windows Media Player OR PowerDVD (I get some strange error about decoding)

What the....?

What am I supposed to do now, uninstall PowerDVD as well? Then start over again?

Anyone here with comprehensive experience in dealing with codec packs, who could give me some advice about what to install - and apparently in what order as well?

Doom9 only has divx 3.1, 4 and 5.

The rest of the stuff is for encoding divx. I don't encode divx (or xvid), I only need to play videos.

And by the way, the error I get with PowerDVD is

"DVD-Video playback graph building failed."

Strangely enough, WinDVD works?!

Codec packs make Baby Jesus cry.

The following has always worked for me:

1) Install ffdshow
2) Done

Unless I run into something with AC3 audio, that's all I've ever needed.

so. just ffdshow, and nothing else? good.

Now, do you think I should uninstall and then re-install PowerDVD? because right now it doesn't work....

get gspot codec thingie that tells you what codecs the video is using see if you got them. You could uninstall them then reinstall. Should be in device manager under the sound and stuff. Audio codecs and Video codecs.
