My SLI seems temperamental

Hi all 🙂

I have 2 7800GTX in SLI at the moment. An MSI (default 430 and 1.2) and an XFX (default 450 and 1.25). As far as I can tell both cards are running at the higher clocks (those clocks are displayed when I check in the control panel). I've installed NV Silencer 5 Rev 3 on both cards.

My problem is that when SLI appears to be working correctly, I tend to get around 80FPS in BF2 with everything maxed out and Transparancy SS on. However, while I might get those frames the first time I play after rebooting, each other time I play I seem to be getting around 40fps (which I assume is standard for one 7800GTX?). I'm not sure why this is. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, I've tried disabling, enabling SLI each time I want to play, but it seems fairly random 🙁

One thing I did notice, which isn't too good, is that when I installed the Silencer on the MSI, the contact isn't too great on the top memories. There's often a gap of a few milimeters (at least on the one memory closest to the 'top' of the card. I can physically pinch the card and cooler together to get the pad and memory to 'stick', but this is only temporary. I'm wondering if this has something to do with it (maybe it's having issues and throttling back or something). That said, the card temps read fine in the control panel. Is this likely to be the problem do you think? Even so, I want to do something about it but and was thinking I need to get some sort of clamp that I can fix to the card to pinch the mem and pad together, but I can't think of anything suitable for that, any ideas? 😀

Thanks for your help

Simon
