My sister who lives with her husband near Albany NY came close to burning down her apt complex.
She had just put some eggplants to broil in the oven. She then went to answer a phone call in the bedroom. Apparently the cordless doesnt work right in the kitchen.. so she walked to the bedroom with it. 5 minutes later she came back and found the kitchen in smoke.. the smoke alarms hadnt gone off yet. The first thing she did was turn off the oven and then she called 911. She then went outside and didnt know what to do.. "her cries for 'help' " wasnt unanswered until a british lady came out to see what the noise was all about. IN the mean time the fire dept arrived and promptly put out the kitchen fire.
Damage: Cooking range has to get replaced, Carpets are a mess, kitchen is all blackened. Luckily the cooking range was an electric cooking range and not a gas cooking range. Otherwise god knows what would have happened.
Insurance is covering everything so they dont pay a dime. Needless to say it was a close call for my sister.. she coudlnt understand why the smoke alarm didnt go off.. considering it did go off once when her mother in law was cooking some traditional bengali dishes.
There was a fire extinguisher in the apt but my sister didnt know how to use it.. as usual.. she never read the instructions from day one. I tell her to read instructions all the time.. and guess where that gets me.. she never reads instructions... I hate her when she tries to say she knows all.. but then she doesnt.
Oh well .. she is safe ... holed up in a hotel for a few days i think.
Edit: Cause of the fire... Oven Mitts in the Oven.. She forgot to take them out.. before putting in the eggplant dish.
