i have a sempron 3100. i opened up my pc to do something. when i closed it, a wire got stuck in the cpu fan, thus the fan didnt spin. and i didnt notice.

i set the bios to shut down at cpu=80c.

Was there any damage to the cpu? How do I check?

Modern CPU's have thermal protection, while 80c is hot, unless it's running at that temp pretty much constantly for a long period of time, it's gonna be just fine. I had a heatsink improperly mounted, that allowed one of my engineering sample P4's(which doesn't have thermal protection, so it actualy kept running) to hit 120c..and it's still working.

Something similar to that has happened to me before. System kept shutting down after just booting into windows. It did it three times before I cracked open the case to find a dead fan on the CPU heatsink.

Thank goodness for BIOS thermal protection, the CPU is still running over a year later.

80C is pretty hot, i ran my athlon 3200 without a fan and it only got to like 60C and stabilised there.
Well if it still works thats good, just do prime95 and run some games etc, if it passes its fine.
