This is what i use when i decide to scan my pc:

First i clean out my temporary files with CCleaner ( so the scanners wont have to scan them)

Then i update and do quick scans with Malwarebytes+SuperAntiSpyware. Should i add anything else?

What about Tune Up Utilities or Auslogics BoostSpeed? Are those any good?

I rarely scan my PC anymore but I use the same programs myself when I feel the need. I also would probably scan with my AV which is Avira free. The trick is to be proactive in your security setup and not reactive.

I've been using Sandboxie to surf with. When I remove anything from the sandbox to my hard drive, I would scan it with all three programs and/or upload it to virustotal or jotti to be scanned by multiple scanners.

As far as speeding up the PC goes, I normally avoid programs like that unless I manually do the tweaking myself.

You could scan with online scanners like ESETs http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/ or Trend Micros http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Check settings, options first. ESETs is really nice and installs itself much like a regular program. There is also Hitman Pro http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro which is made for this 2nd, 3rd, 4th. opinion idea.

If you know what those gadgets you mention do then use them, if not skip until you know. Most of them live high on the fact most get sucked in to keywords like "tune" "tweak" "boost", "optimize" "speed". They accumulate a bunch of already known settings/"tweaks" some of which can be known BAD ones as well, put it into an easy to use GUI and then you are supposed to go click, click. Especially if you consider paying for such things be sure you know why, what precisely does program offer that you can't already get for free? Take program a part 1 feature at a time. When done what is left?
