hey i have a megapath/rhythms sdsl connection of 256k. I am currently getting around 249/248 and was wondering is there a way to make it climax or is that speed just about it?

http://www.dslreports.com. I think it is by far the nicest site on broadband. It has many different tests like line speed, packet loss, tweaking. One that has worked well for broadband is the TCP Receive Window (RWIN) tweak. You can find more about it here.

EDIT: Didn't notice that you are peakin out your connection. I'm not sure what the tweaks will do for that, but there isn't to much you can do aside from purchasing more bandwidth for the most part.

I have ADSL, but I get a 1454/128k connection.. I run the tests and get results of 1210/109k. Not bad for $40 a month

You guys shouldn't consider these tests accurate by any means. If you really want to know how fast your line is capable of do ftp file transfers to your ISP (which should be a hop or two away from you).

Also, just for those interested. Take note that there's always an 8-10% overhead on DSL lines so if you have a 256k line you will max out at 235.52k

I guess I got lucky. My 768/128 line often goes all the way to the 900s. It even topped 1Mbps once or twice. Maybe they have raised my cap after all the bitching when they couldn't get the darn thing going at all.

Thanks, I feel better now. :)

How'd you verify your speed? Yep, some ISP's *do not* cap their users. In fact i have a 768 SDSL line which was branded as ADSL, but my upload and downloads are synchronous :) *shhhh* heheh...
