My SCSI controller seeing my harddrive as narrow instead of wide

I'm using a Diamond Fireport 40 (yeah that's right) and my harddrive is an IBM Ultra Star 9ES. The Fireport is seeing my harddrive as narrow and not wide for some reason. I don't know when it started doing this, but I think it's the reason I can't perform a clean install Windows XP (it gives an error about a possible problem with the harddrive or controller). I've checked the jumpers on the harddrive and the seem to be correct, it is terminated. I set the settings in Fireport BIOS Sync Rate 40 width 16, but it still reverts it back to 20/8 when it boots.
Does anyone know what could be wrong and how I could fix it?:disgust::frown:
