And I was wondering if I could bring my laptop and use up their internet. Even if not, could I use there line for my DSL somehow??? Basically, the question here is, how can I make use of this outlet?

(No, I haven't talked to my school yet. I just thought of this right now)

I'm going to go play BF1942 now :)

well, the answer is simple, if the ports are wired up for internet, then yes, otherwise no.

You definately could not use their telephone line for your DSL. Phone lines have to be provisioned for DSL and propertly filtered.

You might be able to plug your laptop's Ethernet port into one of those Ethernet outlets at your school and get Internet access through their network. We have no way of knowing what those outlets at your school do and who is allowed to use them. If you wanted to try it you could set the TCP/IP settings on your laptop to DHCP(Obtain an IP address automatically) and see what happens when you turn it on plugged into the outlet. Make sure you use a standard patch Ethernet cable rather than a crossover cable.

You really need to talk to someone at the school about the outlets and see if you're allowed to use them and what the outlets do.

What's standard patch vs. crossover?

And I was thinking about using my ethernet/usb adapter to hook it up.... is this a problem?

I'll go talk to them monday though

Not necessarily... perhaps the port needs to be activated, maybe there is no DHCP server, and they assign statically. maybe, it's DHCP, but they use MAC filtering. u should find out from your school's computing services if that port is ok to use and get instructions on how to connect to it.

Why not ask the librarian?

Commercial phone jacks are also an RJ45 (more often than not). You could be plugging into their phone system ... which could be bad. OR you could be plugging into their Token-Ring Network, which would be bad. OR you could be plugging into a "special" outlet wired by Bob-Ed the maintenance guy to provide 12V to his radio while he's buffing the floors after hours.

Jacking into someone else's network without their knowledge and permission could lead to some interesting times for you.

Ask first.

There is a university 2 blocks from me. I found their internet library site and found out they were online..I first asked if they had wifi connections. Some schools want to have you use a student ID :-( This library did not :)

They have a desk, it has 4 ethernet cables ready to be plugged into someones laptop.

They also have several desktops for the public.

I ran the network wizard, fired up IE, and began surfing and downloading :)

Bring your own ethernet cable. I would say NOT a crossover.

good luck
