My SATA drive keeps reverting back to PIO mode!

Hi I have the following setup:
Gigabyte P965-S3 v1.0 board
200GB Maxtor SATA 3.0, model 6V200E0
Windows XP SP2

The problem is that after installation, every couple of days, the HD reverts back to PIO mode from the UDMA mode set in the driver. I had to manually delete the IDE driver and on restart reinstall it then it goes back to UDMA mode. I don't know why this is happening, is there anyway to manually lock the drive mode to UDMA? I assume some sort of problem occured during drive mode handshakes process between the board SATA controller and the Maxtor.

Any help is appreciated.

This happens when there are too many transmission errors on the cable. SATA or IDE doesn't matter much.
