I really want a nice LCD, but for nearly $800 for similar viewable area, it's too much money to spend I think but I am saving for the future, and I am curious to know.... is it really worth it to upgrade my 955DF?

I play games mostly, Quake3 (yes, still hehe, i rule at it), America's Army, UT2004, and Doom3 when that comes out. I also play some crappy games that I love (Starcraft and others), but I am guessing that won't make a huge difference.

Does the quality in the newer LCDs warrant me to get one yet, or should I just keep waiting until they drop more in price? I figure I can get one by the end of the year or something, unless you think that the quality on these LCDs nowadays is much better than my CRT.

Appreciate any information you can lend.

Thanks!

I just replaced my 955df with a Samsung 173P 17 in lcd. It looks just as large, and the quality is stunning, while my 955df was just pretty good.

FYI, crt -> lcd is not a straight size comparison. A 17inch lcd is about halfway between a 17inch and 19inch crt. LCD's actually have the rated area as viewable (a.k.a. a 17 inch lcd has 17 viewable inches) whereas a 19inch crt has only 18 viewable inches.

I have the same 955DF monitor for 3 years and i am not ready to give it up.

I figure, i'd really need a 19" LCD to give me more area . . . and i'd rather spend $500 on a videocard than $900 on a monitor . . . ;)

The only real shortcomings of the 955DF is it's mediocre refresh rate: 1280x1024 @ 80hz and i run 1152x864@85hz as i am rather nearsighted (anyway) . . .

i am gonna wait until the 19+" LCDs are at the price where the cheap 17s are today . . . by then i'll probably need to replace it anyway.
