My Samsung 223BW died. Need a new monitor

Hi Guys,

My Samsung monitor took a dive and I need something to replace it with. I do software development so am looking at 23 and 24" monitors. I also do some photoshop work for my side business, so I do value color. I do a little gaming, FFXI, so I do like a quick monitor, but it is nothing like requirements for CODBO, but I have an x360 for that.

I am interested in the NEC EA231WMI-BK: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824002524

Read some about some Acer or Asus, but read a bunch of posts that said super monitor, then some said washed out. I don't want washed out for sure!

Price point, which I figure is too low for what I want, but is <= $300.

I need to go look at some monitors to help me make a decision, but really value your input. Especially if you have this monitor or the one you are recommending.

Thanks,
Dave

The Asus monitors I've seen have been pretty decent. For TN panels anyway.

What happened to your 223BW?

I may be interested in taking it off your hands instead of sending it to the dumpster.

Hmmm. I was reading the reviews at TFT central last night on the NEC and the DEC.

My Samy had been turning itself off immediately after I turned it on... took about 3 to 5 times to get it up. Then the other night we had a power outage. Seemed like a clean break of power, but it hasn't come back on since. Light just blinks a couple times then stays off.

and thanks for the responses.

From reading, I guess the advantage of the Dell, is that it is a bit quicker monitor. Still reading the review so not sure what else.

There's a couple things you need to figure out first:

1. The Samsung is a 16:10 ratio screen. If you prefer this aspect ratio over the wider "HD" ratio at 16:9, then you will have to stick with 22-23" monitors at 1680x1050 resolution. The reason is that there are very few 16:10 ratio screens at 1920x1200 resolution because the LCD companies have flooded the market with super cheap 1920x1080 screens. The wider screens are good for movies but some find them to be a bit too short for actual computer work. Find out which side you are on first before buying a new monitor.

2. If you take color accuracy seriously, especially if you do actual graphics work, then you will want an IPS panel, which don't come cheap. The few 24" 1920x1200 (16:10) monitors on the market are IPS screens that will pretty much handle anything you throw at them (productivity, photowork, movies, games). However, expect to pay in the range of $400-600. The HP ZR24w and the Dell U2410 are the ones to look at in particular. There is an HP seller on eBay with decent prices and Dell occasionally has coupons with significant discounts. Again, check out an IPS panel in person to find out if this makes a difference for you.

If you don't care about aspect ratio or color accuracy, then you are in luck because then you can pick up a 23-24" 1920x1080 (16:9) TN panel at ridiculously low prices (<$200).

bad caps probably, samsung had a bunch of monitors they made which had bad caps same as motherboards and what not, friend of mine just got one for free on the sidwalk a couple weeks ago and resoldered new caps in, works fine now again and he's using it as his secondary monitor when gaming

Now that is an idea. If it is just bad caps, then I can handle that. Do they typically leak with this failure? I will have to take a look.

Thanks for all the input.

Yes you should be able to fix that. The caps will be bulgy looking inside. I'd replace ALL of the secondary caps and the ones around the backlight inverter, even if they don't look bad. Get Panasonic FM series caps from digikey.
