Haha, that sounds adorable. :) I have a Macedonian roommate. Back when the World Series was on, she was watching with me, and I was trying to explain what was going on so she could understand the American Pasttime. You know something? You don't realize how fucking complicated baseball is until you're trying to explain it to someone who's never seen it before.

I still haven't been able to get my Indian friends to explain cricket to me.

It's impossible. I still think they just make up the rules as they go.

Yeah I cannot understand cricket. But I haven't had a cricket player try to teach me. I'm a huge fan of baseball, my best sport right there and would kill to have the opportunity to play big. Hitting slump killed me.

But yeah OP, Russians are awesome. Hell, getting any foreigner to explain football is hilarious because they don't get the point of any of it, and don't understand why it has the rules it does. To them, American Football is ridiculous. :) I don't blame them for thinking that, as comparing it to the world's sport - soccer - it's every bit backwards, especially considering the ball touches the foot about 1% of total playtime, so why we call it football has gotta be the first major hurdle for anyone to understand.

Cricket is very easy to understand if you really want to. I guess americans would give a shot at playing it when twenty-20 cricket is introduced in the london olympics.
Just minutes ago, the indians have thrashed england in a 7match series 4-0 with 3 more matches to go.. . . Cricket is in a world of its own, just like american football or baseball is. . .

My GF is Latvian. I've gone over the rules for 3 consecutive years. and she still can't grasp it. And yes, the more I try to explain, the more complicated it sounds.

common situation:
me: see, he just needs to outrun the ball to the base
her: well, the ball got there first but they say he's safe.
me: he wasn't tagged. he slid into base so he needs to be tagged by the short stop.
her: what?

and on and on. It doesn't help that each base has its own rules for defining an out. :)

baseball has actually become quite international over the previous 2 decades. It's hugely popular in Asian countries, and pretty much the entire western hemisphere.

Cricket remains isolated to former and current British colonies. I mean, it's basically big in India and the UK only, right?

Cleo McDowell: No, I didn't.
Akeem: Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big "H". It was a most ripping victory.

To an extent.... But once the decision is made to bring Twenty-20 cricket (that's the one with 20 overs a side matches) to the London Olympics, a lotta countries will take to cricket, and you do know, Canada and The U.S. also have cricket teams don't you??

I believe it is also relatively popular in Australia.

Very much so. And in the West Indies, South Africa, Zimbabwe (atleast it was)... yeah, basically all the former British colonies. It is one helluva game though.

Oh man we were disgraceful. None of the players seem really bothered either, just more excuses.
