11. I bitch about gas prices

A couple of things.

First applaud you for your effort.

You are obviously not rich like most people on here.

However please don't even get on the Interstate or the 2 lane country road if you are going to impede traffic like that.

At those speeds get on a bicycle instead.

I stopped speeding most of the time and went from 26mpg to 32mpg on my '99 Grand AM with 120k miles on it. I just laugh as people fly by me in the other lanes and wonder how nice it must be to be rich or how sorry it is to be that stupid. ;)

Alright, all of your eloquently posted arguments have helped me realize something....

I'm an asshole and a douchebag, but if you talk to any of my friends and family they'll already know these things.

I don't have a lot of money and have a 45 mile commute. To me, saving those $4 for an hour is worth it and I really don't give a flying fuck if some moron in a gas guzzling SUV has to spend extra money on gas because they can't properly plan out their day. I really don't care if I cost you an extra 3 seconds on your drive to work because of my driving habits. You guys are right, I probably don't save anyone else any money (didn't realize it until you guys gave me some examples) but I'm still going to drive 45 on the highway. It is relaxing for me and I give myself ample time to get to and from the places I need to go. I see plenty of other people putting along in the slow lane, and as I was a very aggressive driver in the past I know that 2 additional lanes is more than enough for everyone to cut those precious 3 seconds off of their drive times.

@dmcowen674: The 2 lane country road is the only other route :(

Now let's talk about those people who like to drive down the on-ramp doing 35...

Go!

1. congratulations? i hope you didn't buy it off ebay for $7500.
2. you are more hazardous than someone speeding, going that slow.
3. still hazardous, just not as much
3 (again) - just don't get pissy if you get passed by other people
4. fine. i coast too.
5. meh. i see gas as part of my COL. traveling is a necessity for me, not an option.
6. have fun if you live in a hot-as-balls area.
7. congrats?
8. this will barely save you any money. not that saving money is a bad thing, but 1-2c/gallon at 20gal/fill at 1 time per week for a year is all of $20. you'd probably spend more time and gas hunting for good prices.
9. supposedly the difference is negligible, but it can't hurt.
10. i laugh at people who think they're somehow better
11. i don't bitch about gas prices.

Haha, I hate that! You're supposed to accelerate to match speed with traffic on the highway, not piss around at 40 mph hoping someone gives you an opening.

1. Nope, $750 a few years back
2. This has been covered (way more in depth than I wanted to go too lol)
3. I don't get pissy, I've been in their shoes and understand that my driving habits can be frustrating.
4. :)
5. Just to clarify. Traveling is a necessity for me too, I plan my trips out to minimize cold starting times and avoid routes with lots of traffic/lights.
6. Florida :(, but I have a convertible so it isn't too bad... only time I can't put the top down is when it is raining and aside from the occasional sun shower the rain cools things off enough to make life without AC bearable.
7. No congrats needed. Was just including that because there are numerous folks out there that don't do this that don't realize it kills mpg.
8. Another clarification. I use online tools to find the cheapest gas I can that won't increase my trip by more than a mile. I save about .08 per gallon for < 1/4 mile increase in trip distance.
9. Agreed, but even if it is <0.01 per gallon it adds up and when added to all of the other minor things it can really help out.
10. No comment. Want to stay out of another pissing contest.
11. :)

I've seen a bunch of posts by people that say "You only save 3 cents" or something to that effect, but when you add that 3 cents to another few cents here and there it adds up over time. I do almost everything I can to cut down on what I feel are unnecessary expenses because I think it will help me out in the long run. It is just like overclocking a computer or tuning an engine... all the minor adjustments add up.

That is about the worst graph I have ever seen.... Tracking mileage for a year on my car I have found a 5mpg difference between 45 and 55 and about a 10 mpg difference between 45 and 70. I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make with that graph. I can do 65 in my car in 3rd gear and completely throw off any generic graph you can post...

A lot of people have been making this claim, but can you show any evidence at all supporting it? I think it could be reasonable to argue that driving significantly slower than the speed limit could be more dangerous than following the limit, but there is no doubt that people who speed are statistically more likely to be in an accident. As far as I know, this doesn't apply to people who drive slow. I eagerly await your stats, although I doubt you can produce anything.

I completely agree with this comment. I travel 40 miles each way to work and have varied my speeds greatly. My best gas mileage is between 60-70. Unfortunately now that school is back in session and I live on Long Island, this will not happen to often until next school break.

I suspect you could dig up stats to support whichever position you care to push but almost any professional driver I have seen address the subject says that it is actually the differential that is dangerous so going 45MPH when the traffic is flowing at 70MPH is just as dangerous as going 105MPH in that same traffic. The safest thing is to go with the flow of the traffic and keep to the right lanes except to pass. As one racecar driver said the goal should be to drive in such a way as the other drivers around you don't even notice you are there.
