My rule if you are going to complain about gas prices

I don't want to hear people bitch about gas prices if they are still traveling down highways over the speed limit. The amount of SUV's I see on the road that fly by me(even when gas was at $4+ a gallon) is amazing. I specifically call out SUV's because their cross-sectional surface area is higher and therefore they are typically affected by wind resistance more.

However, this goes for all cars. In my opinion, if you want to complain about the cost of gas you should first do everything you can to reduce your costs. The most obvious steps you can take are:

1. Drive less

2. Driver slower

All the major news stations have also said this but leave it to people to just complain how unfair it is.

I, for one, have slowed down 10MPH on average on highways in MI and by doing so I have increased my average fuel economy anywhere from 5-8MPG depending on how long I am on the highway for(I drive a G6 GT).

I could get into the amount of times I see people needlessly speed into stopped traffic but that's a whole different issue.

Agree/Disagree?

Somewhat agree. I believe people can do just about whatever they want. But what they fail to realize that driving less = less money spent on gas, and more gas to go around. If the industry sees lower demand then the prices will go down.

Disagree. It depends on the motor and gearing. I get my best mileage at around 80-85 Mph.

Strongly disagree. I don't complain about fuel prices, and wish people would get the hell out of my way. I've got places to go and people to see.

I am gonna have to doubt you on that....unless the gear ratios are very odd in your vehicle. Wind resistance^2 is too big of an effect. Another exception could be a hybrid car.

I don't understand people who complain about gas going up 3 cents/gallon, then go spend $15 on lunch. I don't think people understand the math (3 cents x 15 gallons = 45 cents, aka not a big deal).

Disagree, I'll complain as much as I want as loud as I want and drive as fast as I want.
Of course, I don't complain too much, I accelerate more slowly these days, and I've figured out how to time the stoplights on my way to work such that I don't have to stop for any of them and coast a bit.

Then you don't disagree...I only said people who complain about fuel prices.

Am I complaining about the cost of electricity? Am I complaining about the cost of gas? No. I am saying those who do.

It's not so much the three cents, it's that it's yet another three cents. Some of us were used to paying less than a buck a gallon for quite a while.

Speed limit is 70, that is in between gears...too high for 5th to be fuel efficient, too low for 6th. To get optimal mileage out of 5th I need to drive 55-60 which is just dangerous. I drive 160 miles each day so I pay meticulous attention to my mileage.

As long as you stay in the far right lane, bully for you. If we're on a road with no passing lane, hurry your ass the fuck up. Shit, I will personally give you 20 bucks in gas money as long as I don't have to sit behind someone who is tooling around under the speed limit. I'm on the road to get somewhere, not fuck away time in my car.

I only disagree in that I don't *care* whether people complain or not... I just don't want them driving any slower.

Does electricity and the cost of said have anything to do with energy/gas pricing?

I should have thought of that when I got pulled over... "Well you see Officer, due to the gear ratios of my transmission, I have to maintain 80mph to be most efficient without falling below the minimum speed limit posted. I'm only trying to reduce our country's dependency on foreign oil and help the environment!"

probably doesn't belong here, but it is a gas thread. I am in the Baton Rouge area after the hurricane now and on Wed I saw lines for gas. The only gas station in the area that was open had 2 pumps open.

We drove down and counted the cars in line for 1 of the pumps...65 cars.

The wait was around 7-10 hours to fill up.

Another gas station had a line of about 150-200 cars and it wasn't even open yet. Glad I filled up before the storm and stocked up.

That's dumb. Someone can afford to go 80 @ $4/gallon, but that doesn't mean they didn't like paying $3 more.

Stupid thread/suggestion.
