My roommates girlfriend's laugh is driving me insane!

I own a townhome and rent out a room. Recently, my roommate has hit it off with a a new girlfriend. At first I was happy for him, until I have had to spend a lot of time with her.

She has the most annoying laugh one has ever heard, and she laughs at everything. For example, this weekend I was watching football and there was a childrens hospital commercial showing sick children, she was laughing at the sick kids. I was appauled.

At first, I thought it was just me that was super annoyed by this laughing, but recently my roommate took his girlfriend to a party hosted by a workmate. I received numerous texts about how annoying and frequent the laugh was. I even got one where someone noticed everyone going wide-eyed when she laughed. I had told one person about this laugh previous to the party and I received a text saying that the laugh is much worse than I made it out to be.

I also recorded a few laughs and sent them to a friend. He did not believe me that the laughs were real and thought it was someone just trying to make the most annoying laugh possible.

The frequency of laughs is astounding. I'd say she probably averages about a laugh a minute, and the laughs last a long time. Just in the amount of time taken to type this single paragraph, I have heard 3 laughs.

The laughs pierce through walls. She can be downstairs, I upstairs with my door closed and I can hear the laughs as if she were standing right outside my door.

Basically, I am 100% miserable when she is around. She comes over a few evenings during the week and at least one full weekend day. I have not confronted my roommate about this issue, as I feel that he should be allowed to have company over, but this is seriously driving me insane.

What should I do? Should I talk to him about reducing the frequency as to which she visits? Would I be out of line in doing so? If he refused, should i consider giving him notice and terminating our renting agreement? I am honestly to the point where I'd rather have no renter than have to put up with this. I can afford it.

Or should I just man up and take the pain (and hope the relationship doesn't last)? I know this seems to be a pretty minor thing to be complaining about, but the laugh and it's frequency is just so terrible.

Step 1 - find balls
Step 2 - politely talk to roommate
Step 3 - ???
Step 4 - should be solved

You mentioned having recordings of the laugh but didn't provide them.

When you just flat out say it like this, it sounds terrible

Me: "Hello Roommate"
Roommate: "Why hello there!"
Me: "I need to talk to you about your girlfriend"
Roommate: "Shoot. I'm listening"
Me: "I've noticed she has been over here quite a bit. Can you not have her over as much?"
Roommate: "Why? I pay rent, I live here, can I not have people over?"
Me: "Sure, just not as often"
Roommate: "She isn't over here that much, a couple nights a week and a weekend day, what's wrong with that?"
Me: "I just feel that she is over here too much."
Roommate: "Do you not like her?"
Me: "I am happy that you have a girlfriend, but sometimes I find her annoying"
Roommate: "What don't you like about her?"
Me: "Her laugh"
Roommate: "Really, you want her to come over here less... because of her laugh?"

It seems petty and it would feel petty for me to bring this up. That's why I'm soliciting opinions to make sure that it's not petty if I bring it up.

No MP3's will be provided. I'm not out to make this persons life miserable. If she ever knew who I was on this thread or ever found out people making fun of her laugh online I would feel pretty terrible.

ogg will be fine. Open standards are better for web use anyway.

You own the house, you set the rules. Just talk to your roommate, maybe he can spend time over at her place and leave you alone.

FLAC is called for in situations like this.

Hmm... You have a point. I don't think relevant advice can be given without full fidelity, especially in the upper registers. That could make a huge difference.

We all think the OP is just a horrible, petty douchebag. We need to see what he has to put up with to see the gravity of the situation and weigh in on our thoughts of how to rid himself of the horror.

Just tell your roommate to be less funny.

Maybe your roommate hasn't noticed how annoying her laugh is. Maybe once he becomes aware of it it will bother him too. And before you know it, girlfriend is gone.

Meh, I have a coworker who's laugh annoys the eff out of me, yet it's a perfectly pleasant laugh. She's pleasant and nice, but it's just how often it is, pisses me off now.

Agreed. just suggest, off-hand "My, Candy's laugh is quite odd, don't you think?"

Roommate: Really, what do you mean?
You: It's just odd, you haven't noticed?
Roommate: no, not really.
You: I don't know, just sounds...strange to me. whatever.

then go about your various businesses. WIthin 2 or 3 days, this will savagely eat at your roommate, until he can no longer stand to be around her.

problem solved.

See, I know this works, b/c it's the premise of just about every episode of Seinfeld. :D
