My roommates' cat hates me.

She just got down here in AZ on Monday (she had been living with his parents in MN) and she hisses, growls and (sometimes) almost lunges at me! I like cats, and most cats like me, but this one doesn't for some reason. I haven't been mean to her at all, in fact, coming home from the airport it sat on my shoulders while i was driving (she crawled up on my neck/shoulders and laid between me and the seat).

I'm hoping she grows to like me, or at least not hiss and growl at me. being in a new house for the first time i can understand the stress.

anyone else have a cat that hated them at first and are now best friends?

Actually, there's a modicum of truth to that: if you're the guy feeding the cat, she may get to like you a lot more since she associates you with food. See if your roomie will let you be the one to feed her for a while.

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. Cats can be wacky about sudden changes in locale....she'll probably calm down in a month or so.

pyonir - my sister's car hates me. Sometimes he'll do what you described, and sometimes on his nice days he won't. Whenever it's time for him to eat you could be the one to open the can of food and such - my sister's cat is usually nice when I feed him

Cats want attention when they want it, not a moment before or after. They are so unlike dogs, who will gladly accept attention when ever you're giving it.

The best thing to do with a cat who doesn't like you is to completely ignore it. Don't go to it for attention, don't try to pet it, don't look at it, don't talk to it, completely ignore it. Allow it to come to you when its ready, then be affectionate. It is a reverse psychology ploy of sorts and it works great. Cats are a lot like rabbits in this respect.

yeah, i guess i knew that. i've grown up with cats around, and they always paid more attention to me than anyone else, and this one hates me thus far. but yeah, i've already started ignoring her, and will continue to. she'll either learn to co-habitate with me, or come around.
