So.. my new roommate (who's actually a pretty nice dude.. clean.. cooks..) has an assault shotgun. I have no problem with guns or him having guns. He hasn't had cartridges for it since he moved in.

But.. he just came home with a box of cartridges and said he plans on keeping it loaded. Am I okay with that? Should I be?

I just know if I had a gun, and kept it loaded, I'd blow my foot off.. I'm kind of a clutz, though, sometimes.

Roommate? Like, in college?

Tell him to keep the shells near the shotgun, but not keep it loaded...I wouldn't trust some random guy to keep a loaded gun near me and never have an accident.

Are you okay with it?

I don't think keeping it loaded is necessary. Unless there are some insanely fearless crooks in your area, seeing a shotgun is threatening enough whether it's loaded or not. I wouldn't be worried that he's out to kill you or anything though either :p.

ideological difference:

one side: as long as he's responsible, you'll be fine
another side: make him secure it

you pick which you want to listen to.

So why is he keeping the gun, home defense maybe? An unloaded gun won't do that job very well. As long as he doesn't like to get drunk and do a Clint Eastwood impression I'd say you're in the clear.

Yeah, with a title like "Graphic Pic Of Shotgun Wound" I expected something suitable for a 2nd grader to watch.

I myself would be worried. An assault shotgun is not something ideal for home defense (which is the only reason I could possibly think of to keep it loaded at home), as the spread & power is going to destroy much more than any thief could take. Sure it might be useful in a firefight at home, but I'd rather have a handgun for that anyway, if it really came down to it.

no problem with it being loaded, so long he's got a lock on it

Maybe I should see his shotgun and raise him a Deagle just to be sure..

I know nothing about guns.. but I plan to eventually at least go to gun safety class so I can know how to use one. I have always felt secure without one.. so I don't see any reason now for me to own one.

EDIT:
Any med students in the house? How come the foot is not blue ? With that amount of damage, he shouldn't have much blood supply down there.

Because it takes soooo long to load a gun, that the crook has teleported into your house, realized that your SHOTGUN was unloaded, and slit your throat:confused:

There's nothing wrong with keeping the shells next to the gun....much safer, and 99.9% as good for home defense.
