I bought this laptop last summer for a good price.

specs:

cpu -P6200
ram - 4GB DDR3 (max -8GB)
Hdd - 500 GB
15.6" HD screen

when I bought it there were 2 keys missing on the keyboard so I replaced the keyboard.

the laptop was running the factory reset Win 7 Home Premium x64 OS.

the laptop ran ok but was getting kind of hot after an hour.

I put the laptop off to the side and didn't get back to it until last week. I installed HWmonitor from cpuid and the idle temps were 75C. Way too warm for my liking. So I decided to tear it apart and inspect and clean the cooling system on it.

I also figured if I was going to do all that I may as well upgrade the cpu. I checked for approved cpus and decided I could get an I5-560m for it off ebay for a good price. I also checked kijiji (like craigslist but run by ebay). On kijiji I found a guy selling an I3-350m for $15 which included a 2GB DDR3 module too. So I bought that instead.

I tore apart the laptop yesterday and found a nasty blockage between the fan and cooling fins. I cleaned all that up and then removed the heatsink-pipe and replaced the cpu and heat sink compound. I buttoned it all back up and tested it out.

It booted up faster than before and the cpu was properly recognized. I ran HWmonitor again and now idle temps are around 42C.

Not only is it running cooler it is also running faster. I am very pleased with the results.

:awe:

UPDATE: I installed win 8.1 pro on it. It works fantastic compared to win 7.

Nice, a task I am dreading with a Toshiba Satellite. Don't remember the processor offhand, but it's sitting idle in the 70s.

Good for you. Is that 1st i3 pretty good performance wise?

definitely faster than before. how much so I am not sure.

Nice work. Gratifying, innit?

Anwyay: SSD Now.

um, not right now. I already have enough money tied up in it as it is.

check the model number and see if there is a dis-assembly video on youtube. its not really that bad.
