My raptor isn't getting detected in bios...

This is my first build and is just about completed.

I have everything installed and setup perfectly as far as I know, but when I boot bios doesn't detect the SATA drive, only the EIDE stuff (2 cd-rom drives and a WD1200JB). I have my driver floppy ready to go so I can set the drive up with windows xp...but BIOS won't recognize it so I can't get to that step yet. Any suggestions?

specs:

Asus K8V
1 GB PC3500 Mushkin Level 1
Radeon 9800 Pro
Audigy 2 ZS
AMD 3200+
WD1200JB - 120 GB storage drive
74 GB WD Raptor

My BIOS doesn't mention it either, but it works. Are the SATA Connnections both enabled in the BIOS? If they are, go into Windows setup, hit F6, load the driver from the floppy for the SATA controller, and Windows XP should find it.

Hmm, perhaps I made the wrong driver floppy? Did you make your driver floppy from the CD that came with the mobo?

Am I correct in thinking that that board uses a SI SATA chip? If so the BIOS won't show the Raptor because it is not plugged into a "native" chip. Wait untill after POST to see the SI loader to see the Raptor.

This just in...don't ask me what I did but bios (or the SI loader probably) sees the raptor now. But there's a catch...now when I hit F6 and insert the floppy I get some weird error like couldn't initialize and it rambles off the names of a few files. This leads me to believe I made the wrong driver floppy. Could anyone instruct me on how to make this floppy? I have the mobo disc (asus K8V) but it has multiple createdisc.exe's on it and I don't know which to use.

OK, I installed the SATA drivers from the floppy....and now when it prompts me to select/create the partition I want windows installed to my raptor doesn't show, just my large storage drive (C). What's the deal?

Since you are installing Windows on your SATA drive it's wise to unplug all IDE hard drives from the system. This prevents possible install issues (such as this one) while installing Windows. And because it's a storage drive you can plug it in after the Windows install is completed and it will work just fine.

the thing is, my EIDE drive is unplugged. I attempt to install windows with just the raptor and I install the promise 378ATA drivers (which I think are the right ones, but that could be the whole problem). I am doing good then until I get a screen that says no harddrives were detected and I must quit installation. It would be really great If someone could go to asus.com under downloads and figure out which are required for a single-non-raided SATA drive since I am clearly incompetent and unable to do so myself :)

It sounds like you have the Raptor plugged into the VIA Onboard controller and not the Promise controller. You will need to install the VIA drivers for it to see it on that controller, or move it to the Promise to use what you have now.
