Nice stuff. It would be interesting to actually do a comparison for a decision making process many users face: ie. buy a faster hard drive or more ram?

How about you compare 1 gig 150gig raptor vs. 2gig old drive you had? Not many games are necessary. BF2 and any other game that takes a long time to load will do.

Too bad your old drive was a 2mb version though. Drives 3 years ago already started to have 8mb.

Thanks for taking the time to test both.
It does help those that have older drives looking to upgrade.

The problem is that by going to 1 GB I'll jump back to single channel which will cause an additional performance drop that isn't related to HD speed.

That and the 120 GB drive has been purged by erasing software and I don't really want to do it again after copying new data to it because it took a long time.

Sorry.

so let me get this straight,
does the 150GB raptor allow the computer to load Windows faster and applications as well?

as compared to the previous 74GB Raptor

if it is outperformed based on benchmarks only,
then it may not justify a change in HDD

just see if you are using more than 1GB and how much more. if you are hitting 1.2+ all the time i would say the more ram since hitting the pagefile all the time is so slow compared to ram. also, you can get 2MB drives today...

the difference going to single channel is what ~5%? you are not running a P4. not much, so you could just inform people of the change.

too bad the 120GB was wiped...

Even if they're slower moving, the higher density means higher TPI which means you can still find stuff faster, and higher density also means higher transfer rate once you find it.

Bump because Raptor questions are still being asked on the front page.

Nice little review.

I'm rather impressed with the loading times...didn't expect them to be that great of a difference.

I think i'll hang onto my "old" 74.3 GB Raptor for a while though :p

Yeah I was curious on peoples thoughts on whether the 74GB version for $155 and slightly slower or the 150GB version for $290 and slightly faster(and bigger) would be the better buy.

Size difference doesn't matter too much- I have 2 120GB segates that I'm using now that could be for file storage and 74GB would be plenty for me on the OS and apps side of things.

It depends on your storage requirements really. For me I needed the 150 because I have over 71 GB games installed so the 74 is too small.

That makes sense- right now I'm at 39 GB for OS and all apps(games) so would you recommend the 74GB version in my case?

Edit- the 16mb cache and being faster makes me want it- but I also could use that extra cash towards a new video card.

if you look around you could get 15k scsi for that price, but maybe 36GB which usually beats anything in game loading times, even my low density 18GB 15K scsi, i am always the first one on the map...of bf2 at least

also raptor = scsi mechanics  wd won't even implement certain items because they claim their version on the raptors are not up to enterprise specs

benches are one thing, but seat of the pants are different. and i am not saying this becuse i spent and arm and a leg for my 15k hdd, i think it ran me $60.
