I have been eying a new Studio in the next month or so and was excited to see what they were going to do. Much to my dismay they have pretty much murdered them. With the Studio 15 they have removed the i7 option leaving the highest offering being i5. It does offer a 1080p LCD though. The Studio 17 still has the i7 but only has a 900p LCD, what the hell? You can get a higher resolution in the smaller monitor. So I can either get a high end CPU to process my HD material or I can get a 1080p monitor to view it on but not both, this sucks. BR drives are still out of stock as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the only difference Hyperthreading, and therefore the i5's will run cooler? I dunno about you but I sure don't need to run 8 threads on a laptop!

Damn, just noticed they also killed the wireless options, no more Intel 5300 or combo wimax card.

I encode a lot of video, I want the eight threads. I need a desktop I just don't have the room for it so I need as much juice as I can get for a decent price. For some various reasons I am stuck with Dell's offerings.

No where to put the monitor. I had to get rid of the desk to make room for a second couch. We have been having a lot more company lately so I had to sacrifice the desk for a second couch. I don't want to be banished to another room when I want to use the computer so I have to have something coffee table friendly.

Maybe you are a good candidate for a pair of 1080p goggles in place of a monitor?

Well after a bit more digging you can still get the i7 in the Studio 15. You have to go to laptop deals and then performance laptop deals to find it. I guess putting the i7 next to the i5 for $150 cheaper wouldn't look to good for their newest offering.
