I would say its fine..

I recently got a raise too, I get a monthly bonus, and they doubled my bonus every month, without touching my salary (~12% increase in gross earnings at years end)

I'm an "Enterprise Engineer"... I work for a major data storage vendor, and am in a hybrid sales-technical role.. I've been doing this for about 15 years now.

I'm honestly not trying to brag... the area I live (Washington DC) in that money doesn't go as far as you'd think.

$170k or something.

To the OP:

You are already at a pretty high income. So, you can clearly market yourself to get whatever you feel you deserve.

Make the move to another company and get that manditory 10% increase. Or, dig your teeth into your boss' throat and tell him/her they aren't doing a good enough job to keep you happy.

Are they working you that hard in your current position where you feel $170K is not worth it? Well then, go get more!

My view is this: if you break the $100K threshold, you are in new territory. Where you are pretty much on your own. If you aren't getting what you feel you should be getting - go get it. No point in asking teh internetz on what you should be feeling about your $170K salary. Or, go find a headhunter. They would gladly take your meger $170K and get you something in the quarter of a million mark to ensure they get their fat vig. Then, you are back to being on your own.

This is you territory tiger - do what HAS to be done.

Apply for other jobs. See if they'll give you a 10%+ raise. If they do, take it :)

The only reason your money doesn't go that far in DC is because you bought a too damn expensive house.

I live in NOVA near DC and trust me... your salary is more than enough if you don't buy a god damn freaking multimillion dollar house.

I wasn't complaining... just trying to figure out how I should feel about a 4.31% raise.

No one here can answer that. Only you know your market, your skill set, and your willingness to change jobs.

Unless it matches inflation - you are actually making less.
This is my position so far. A raise is useless if it doesn't even cover the effect of inflation. In that point of view, the raise isn't really a raise anymore but a way of matching wages with rate of inflation.

But isn't there a point at which your raise doesn't need to match inflation and you still end up ahead because your income is so much above the cost of living? I honestly haven't put a whole lot of thought into this so I guess the theory could be flawed, but someone that makes a salary of $1 Million a year could get a 1% raise ($10,000), and I don't think you could really say they are making less...

I got 4.2% this year.. I was honestly fairly happy with it. I'd already gotten a full time hire on raise not that much before the normal round of raises was to happen.
