Quake 4!
Since I puchased FEAR, Serious Sam II and Q4 around the same time, I was really looking forward to playing the FEAR first (and was expecting it to be more fun too), but I gotta tell ya -I was plesently surprised to find Q4 a fun filled fragfest. Here is my quick 2 cents:
GFX
I really enjoyed the graphical presentation over FEAR, mainly because it ran much smoother on my system. I had to tweak the GFX down in FEAR to get things running at an acceptable rate for enjoyment, but Q4...I had it up and running if widescreen glory within mins.
The level design was jnust ok in the beginning, but I'm happy to say it got increasingly better and more beautiful as the game progressed. You could almost see the developers becoming acustom to the Doom 3 editing tools. Last few levels were great!
The models, although fundamentally fine, were a bit ho-hum. Nothing really special or eye catching. If you've played Doom3, then you know exectly what to expect in most regards.
Weapons
I just have to say, it was REALLY REALLY nice to see a BFG type weapon in a FPS with a refreshing litte twist to it. I LOVED the Black Matter weapon man! If you havent palyed it yet, let me elaborate for you. Firing the weapon shoots a slow-traveling blackhole across the room damaging everything in its path (much like the BFG, right?), but the twist is this -it sucks up anything movable into it sometimes draggint it along. Here is an example:
After picking up the weapon, I walked into a room and about a dozen mobs (omg I play too much wow lolz) jumped me. I backed up and fired the Black Matter weapon at the crowd. As the black ball slowly transversed the room, it sucked all the bodies, guns, barrels, and crates into it dragging them on the ground...with the physics engine properly banging them around and into one another.
The first time this happened, I was cheering at my desk. It was great and I made my wife watch it (she exclaimed, "coool!"). Most of the other weapons are fillers and throwbacks from previous Quakes (not a bad thing at all), and do their jobs respectfully. The shotgun was my favorite. I gotta say though, the machine gun (#2) felt underpowered as I fired it into baddies....felt kinda like a cap gun.
Gameplay
Its a FPS with in-game cut scenes and NPCs tlaking to one another. It was great! I enjoyed walking around the ship and overhearing convos and participating in them. At a certain point in the game, you become a Strogg -but its a little underhwelming. You dont get a cool new vision, you get a health and armor boost of +25. yay. But as you walk around the Strogg ship you can now understand what the PA announceements are saying along with SOME of the Strogg computer consoles (but strangly not all).
Anyways....was fun and am looking forward to the MP now.
