Quake 4!

Since I puchased FEAR, Serious Sam II and Q4 around the same time, I was really looking forward to playing the FEAR first (and was expecting it to be more fun too), but I gotta tell ya -I was plesently surprised to find Q4 a fun filled fragfest. Here is my quick 2 cents:

GFX
I really enjoyed the graphical presentation over FEAR, mainly because it ran much smoother on my system. I had to tweak the GFX down in FEAR to get things running at an acceptable rate for enjoyment, but Q4...I had it up and running if widescreen glory within mins.

The level design was jnust ok in the beginning, but I'm happy to say it got increasingly better and more beautiful as the game progressed. You could almost see the developers becoming acustom to the Doom 3 editing tools. Last few levels were great!

The models, although fundamentally fine, were a bit ho-hum. Nothing really special or eye catching. If you've played Doom3, then you know exectly what to expect in most regards.

Weapons
I just have to say, it was REALLY REALLY nice to see a BFG type weapon in a FPS with a refreshing litte twist to it. I LOVED the Black Matter weapon man! If you havent palyed it yet, let me elaborate for you. Firing the weapon shoots a slow-traveling blackhole across the room damaging everything in its path (much like the BFG, right?), but the twist is this -it sucks up anything movable into it sometimes draggint it along. Here is an example:

After picking up the weapon, I walked into a room and about a dozen mobs (omg I play too much wow lolz) jumped me. I backed up and fired the Black Matter weapon at the crowd. As the black ball slowly transversed the room, it sucked all the bodies, guns, barrels, and crates into it dragging them on the ground...with the physics engine properly banging them around and into one another.

The first time this happened, I was cheering at my desk. It was great and I made my wife watch it (she exclaimed, "coool!"). Most of the other weapons are fillers and throwbacks from previous Quakes (not a bad thing at all), and do their jobs respectfully. The shotgun was my favorite. I gotta say though, the machine gun (#2) felt underpowered as I fired it into baddies....felt kinda like a cap gun. :(

Gameplay

Its a FPS with in-game cut scenes and NPCs tlaking to one another. It was great! I enjoyed walking around the ship and overhearing convos and participating in them. At a certain point in the game, you become a Strogg -but its a little underhwelming. You dont get a cool new vision, you get a health and armor boost of +25. yay. But as you walk around the Strogg ship you can now understand what the PA announceements are saying along with SOME of the Strogg computer consoles (but strangly not all).

Anyways....was fun and am looking forward to the MP now. :)

One time when I fired the black matter gun, it tore the panels off the floor as it passed over them. Christ that was pimp.

I was personally quite underwhelmed by the Dark Matter gun; for a BFG clone it was quite weak.

OTOH Doom3's BFG9000 was great - I just love the charging sound it makes before it levels your opponents.

I've played the single player up to the Reconstitution Level, and then I discovered the DM.. I haven't been back to single player since :( I love the single player, but for me DM will always be king.. For those of us old enough to remember "The Edge" from Quake 2, it is sure nice to play it again with the Doom 3 engine.. I hope to finish the single player game one day, but I like my 30 minutes a day of DM.. Being married is not conducive to sitting around playing games all night :)

If thats the case, you must have really disliked the machinegun then, right? :)

I never even cam close to finishing Doom3, just too boring for me. But Quake4 seemed to get better as the game went along, and I completley agree that the graphics detail also was better as the game progressed.

I actually finished Quake 4, and I would play it thru again on the hardest level if I didn't have FEAR, AOE3, CIV4, CoD2, and BF2 to play also. Why did all these games have to be released at the same damn time?

And Now Gun is out. Arrrggggg.

AoE3 looks like alot of fun. I might ask for it as an x-mas present, but I still have CoD2 and SS2, Guild Wars and Fable (completed once as a good guy, now want to do it evil).

I love it when x-mas nears...all the great games start to trick out (except for Oblivion!) :(

I've just reached the point where Kane becomes a strogg and I've got to say Quake 4 >>>>> Doom 3. Quake 4 isn't revolutionary or anything but it offers a solid SP FPS experience.

The fun has just begun for you. It gets better and better.

BTW, something I didnt mention in my review...

When playing through some of the later levels, it gets pretty dark in some areas. It was SO COOL to have 2 NPCs following you, with flashlights mounted on their guns, providing light for you. Seeing the light cut through the darkness, moving around was something I've never really seen and felt in a game before. Not even in D3. I cannot really explain it, but I think the people who've play Q4 know what I'm tlaking about here...

What I found very unique and impressive is that when you have other squad members going along with you, they are actually able to kill something. Also, they didn't get killed at any prescribed time. If teh engineer with you got killed, you could just "F9" back to you last quick save and replay that area until he lives if wanted.

Over all a pretty good game, but I guess I'm just not a big fan of that particular engine. I liked the HL2 engine better, and my fav is FarCry.
