My Q9300 is on fire

I dunno if this is more suitable to Power/Cooling but here goes.

I'm messing around with a Q9300, it looks like I got a decent chip. So far I've gotten into Windows at 3.5GHz on 1.3v (BIOS set, actual with load 1.28v)

However, within a minute of OCCT testing it errored out due to hitting the 70C max.

I'm running a Zalman CNPS9500 (OCZ Freeze TIM). Granted, it's not the greatest HSF, but I thought it'd be able to cope with a C2Q at <1.3v

Possibly I'm not getting good contact with the HSF/chip. But I've remounted twice with similar results.

Is the CNPS9500 that underpowered for a Quad, or is there something else going on?

*PS* OCCT2.01 (I think that's the version I'm using, not near my desktop rig) automatically sets the Tj max to 100C, so I know the reading is accurate (verified with SpeedFan as well as RealTemp).

If you have less than optimal case flow, paired with a less than great HSF, you could hit 70 at 1.3

My case airflow isn't great (Lian Li V1100B), but this is with the side open. Ambient temp around 70F.

Maybe the 9500 just can't cut it any longer. By the way, I idle at ~50C and then the instant after I start loading the temp rises to ~65C, and then within 30-60s the 70C mark is hit.

70C max? The thermal throttling is around 95C, isnt it?

Intel spec is 71.6C for 3 year life (if I remember correctly)

Faults at 70C. When I upped it to 75C to see where it reached, made it to 72/73 (fluctuated). Don't want to run my CPU at that temp :p

I have my case open too, and even in colder weather (maybe 60 F) my Q6700 gets around 68-70C. But then again I use Linpark for stability testing

The 9500 is a bit old school....I have always hated the zalman design...just my opinion

I think if 1.3v is getting you to 3.6ghz now, then I think you owe it to yourself to get a better HSF (w/ 120mm fan) and push towards 4ghz....

Did I write 3.6? I meant 3.5... either way I think that's a pretty f'in good oc on 1.3 :D

Anyway, I hear you Duvie. How's the Xigmatek HDT-S1283? Reviews look good and it seems like it will fit on my UD3P with the Xbracket. I can pick up both locally for $45. Go for it?

Also I think I'm gonna increase my airflow by getting this and swapping the fan to something with more CFM.

I figure a 1+Ghz clockspeed increase (2.5->3.5+) is worth another $70 or so. We'll see.

the 9500 is outdated, and blown away by new coolers. the xigmatek products perform great and are reasonably priced.

Tj max is 95C. the latest version of speedfan thinks it's 100C, and needs -5C applied to each core reading to agree with core temp and realtemp.

Tj max for Q9300 is 100. Or so says Anandtech.

I'll head over to pick up a Xigmatek and Xbow on Saturday. Will report back with my findings :D

That article came directly from Intel... why would they lie?

well, i can't find anything indisputable that says 95C. right or wrong, it does seem to be the general concensus of the internet. why would 2 of the best temp utilities tell me it's 95C?

edit:
apparently, the latest coretemp and speedfan now correctly list Tjunction Max as 100C. realtemp does not, except for an unavailable beta. after poking around, i found my coretemp had -5 applied to Tj Max. how that happened i have no idea, since this installation of windows is a week old

i'll never doubt you again, until next time :)
