My PS2 Scares Me

As I posted recently, I finally got around to purchasing a PS2. Back when the PS2 was originally released, a lot of people complained about the loading-tray design, and wondered why the machine hadn't been a top-loader. Sony's official reply was that the DVD spun at such high speeds, it would blow the top off of a top-loading machine and the disc could come flying out and seriously injure someone.

I am going back through my pre-release game magazines trying to find it, and was wondering if anyone remembered exactly what magazines and issues it was that this was covered in. I think it was covered in at least two, and I only read three or four magazines at the time. I am currently focusing my search on PSM and EGM.

Oh yeah, then there was this gem. "The PS2 is the beginning of the end of the PC as we know it."

i don't know if the PS2 was "the beginning" but certainly the current generation of consoles has moved a lot of gaming focus away from PCs

Sounds like one of the many BS reasons console companies give for why they did things. Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft all do it. No need to worry.

Lol, MythBusters did this one too... although I think they had to get out the router (in a woodworking sense) before it would explode. I doubt the PS2 has anything faster than a 52x drive, and it's probably much slower than that.

Actually that was pretty much true. PC gaming has been in the toilet for years. 😛

I remember an article I had from EGM back in 1998 that touted the PS2 would have "film-like" graphics.

I remember that episode, they had to move it to like 35000 RPM's before it fragmented.

My personal favorite (possibly of all time) was the recent interview with the Sony boss who said something to the effect of "the PS3 is difficult to program for, but not everyone is meant to program for it" or something like that. That or his "It's nice to be leading the industry" comment.

Course, I could also quote the MS guys with their "What RROD problem" when the 360 was new.

Just look back at the very early PS3 hype, circa 2005. Or, hell, the PS2 hype back in the Dreamcast days. Sony's credibility problem has been LONG in the making.
