My production is suffering - cpu too hot - (had an accident)

On my main machine that is capable of doing the most seti/day I busted off the tabs on the socket that you plug the cpu into.
I was trying to improve cpu cooling by adding a peltier and copper coldplate to my alpha hsf and obviously I applied too much pressure on the little tabs that are there to hold the heat sink in place.
Busted them right off.
A little research told me that ASUS has some kind of design flaw in the chemistry they use on these things and they are a bit more brittle than you expect.
Regardless, now I am stuck. I am currently using bailing wire (19 guage steel wire)
running through the heat sink, around the offset tabs that are on the side of the socket, the one on the back is down low and the one in the front is up high. THis puts the hsf cockeyed and not exactly flat on the cpu.
At idle it runs at 10C according to MBM 5.04 but when I start seti it rapidly rises to 60C when I quickly shut seti off, then the temp rapidly falls back to 10C.
I have ordered the 'repair kit' for this problem from millisec.com but I don't know if it will help when you have busted both sides.
I have thought about using thermal adhesive instead of compound. I know this is generally a big no-no but in this case it may be justified.
Please share any ideas you may have, at this point I am all ears! ô¿ô
 
Wiz, if you use thermal adhesive you won't be able to access the lever to release the CPU anymore, unless you trim the heatsink so it allows it. However, if you do want some high-performance adhesive, let me know. I have an unopened fresh kit of CircuitWorks silver-based epoxy you can have. It was a free sample they sent out.
 
Sukhoi, yes that was with the peltier and just doing email / web browser. Absolutely idle it was 4C 🙂
It really climbed fast with seti on. It went right up to 60C before I could get it turned off.
I disassembled and found it was also condensating just a bit. What a fiasco, another case of wishing I had left well enough alone 🙁

mechBgon, I have a large tube of 'White Thermally Conductive Flame Retardant Non Corrosive" RTV Adhesive Sealant with "High Thermal Conductivity UL-94 VO Recognition MIL-A-46146" here that I used on my video card ram sinks. Those ram sinks are stuck on good and they do get hot!
THis is what I was thinking of using but the point of never being able to get to the lever to release the cpu does give me pause. I will hold off and see if the kit from millisec.com helps me at all.

Tucked around in the cobwebs of my mind, I seem
to remember that the Taisol heatsink grabs all
three tabs, so if you only broke the one...and it
is a pretty decent heatsink...
 
Well I have in my infinite stupidity broken off the center one on the other side as well.
There is an offset tab on either side of the socket, currently I have wire running through the heat sink looping around the tab and then twisting to tighten going through both the top and the bottom.
This isn't working as well as I wish it to but it allows me to run the machine at it's stock speed and keep it cool enough to avoid blue screens.
I'll see if the repair kit from millisec.com helps, if not I may need to do some drilling and filling...
I'll look at the taisol and see if I might be able to use it better than this alpha - thanks.
 
Ok, I fiddle farted around with this thing all night, here it is 5AM and it is FIXED!!!
Running @933mhz and seti going strong with a temp of only 38C WOOHOO

For anyone who cares, I used my 19 guage steel wire running it through and looping one of the offset lugs /
then from the other side did the same. THe trouble was getting it to sit straight and flat on the cpu.
After lots of eperimenting I came up with the right combination of twists and ties and watching the temp in Bios found a nice stable 28C. Booted up, it was sitting at 30C. Started Seti CLi and after 20 mins it's still at 38C.
What a huge pain in the Assimilator.
What I recommend is not breaking off those friggin hsf retention lugs. Barring that I will probably have a 'repair kit' from millisec.com that I can't use here in a few days unless they let me cancel the order... </me heading over to millisec.com>😉
 

Wiz just for curiousity's sake.....what kind of cooling system were you useing......chip type/speed, and motherboard model. I am glad you got it fixed.......just wondering?😕
 
Wiz: Glad that your problem is fixed now 🙂

Another alternative could be to buy another cooler that uses the 4 offset holes and not the tabs on the socket. That would be a more permanent soulution. Here is a link for such a cooler (For socket A though): Swiftech MC462
