Bought it new in 1993 for $149.99
Been feeding it and petting it faithfully, but last night it died. The PS is still good but noone is home inside.
I guess I got my monies worth out of it.
So today, I'll request an RA from HP and see if they'll service it, and I'm out to get another.

<LOVES HP, ever since dad introduced me to Mr. Packard back in the 60's when Dad was interviewing for the Stanford Linear Accelerator staff.
UPDATE
<Used to LOVE HP, now hates offshored CSR even more than before

Allen Craft
Hello?
Venus
Hello Allen.

Venus
Welcome to HP Total Care for Deskjet Products.

Venus
How may I assist you today?

Allen Craft
Hello Venus.... breaking into Bobby Darin's hit song from the 50's....

Allen Craft
sorry I need to find a repair center for my 660c which does not seem to
want to play with the other toys

Allen Craft
The power supply has been swapped and still it does not work

Venus
I am sorry to hear it.

Venus
I understand how difficult trying the situation is.

Allen Craft
No need to apologize

Venus
Alright.

Allen Craft
I have been very happy with HP.

Allen Craft
Just want to know procedure for sending it in for repair

Venus
As I understand that you need to know nearest HP Authorized Service
center.

Venus
Am I correct?

Allen Craft
correct

Allen Craft
yes that is correct

Venus
Go to the following Web site:

Venus
http://hp.infonow.net/bin/find...IENT_ID=HP_LOC_USA_SRV
Venus
Make sure that you need to copy and paste the entire link in new web
browser.

Allen Craft
ok we've done that

Venus
Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Allen Craft
It sentr me to the page I used to contact you. It seems as if we are in
a loop.

Allen Craft
Can you not give me the information I need?

Allen Craft
I need someone to give me information, not links that I've already been
to. I chose the LIVE help option, if that option does not yield results
what do I do?

Allen Craft
Yes answer the question originally posed

Allen Craft
you aren't there anymore are you?

Venus
Please be inform that once you visit the above link it will locate
nearest HP Authorized service center.
Venus
Have you visited the above link?
Venus
Are you with me?

Allen Craft
Yes, I can't believe that you would send me to Radio Shack for service
Allen Craft
Or another retailer.
Allen Craft
They will only try to sell me a new printer

Allen Craft
This printer works fine for what I do and I do not think it is very
effceient to replace a product.

Allen Craft
when repairs can be done

Venus
I am sorry to inform that I would only recommend you to HP Authorized
Service center.
Venus
Okay.

Allen Craft
I resist the "throw away" mentality
Allen Craft
I resist the unnecessary replace / upgrade mentality

Venus
Could you please tell me exact issue you are facing with Deskjet 660c
printer.

Allen Craft
It does not power up. I have swapped out Power supplies with the 600
series printer at the office and it still doea not power up

Venus
Alright.
Venus
Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Allen Craft
I'm still using a 450mhz computer because it is stable and does what I
need to do. There is no reason for me to go out and spend more money on
a new computer or printer when the one I have works fine for my needs
Allen Craft
So basically, I am screwed. I 'll have to go to Radio Shack, listen toi
their sales spiel and try to get my printer serviced?
Allen Craft
what will I need to do, box it up, , take it as is, what!!??

Venus
Yes you can place it in box and take it to service center.

Allen Craft
lets not Call Radio Shack a "service Center" they are a retail store
and they will in turn send it to where ever the service is actually done

Venus
Thank you for reminding me.

Allen Craft
Then, someone there will call me and tell me it is no longer supported
and I will need to buy another one
Allen Craft
thus, I will be forced into buying a product that isn't really needed
simply because HP does not continue to supply parts and support for
products which are still usable.
Allen Craft
This corporate perpetuation of the "throwaway"mentality is wrong.
Allen Craft
I have sold , for HP, dozens of printers and computers in the course of
my business. SiMPLY because of what Mr. Packard once said to my father
which was in essence, as long as the HP name is in existance, we will
support the product.
The problem is , a 10 year old car still has parts available for it,
yet a 10 year old printer does not.
it seems really narrow minded and short sighted to think in this way

Venus
As this printer is old printer, probably the service will not be
available for this printer. However, you can Trade-in for refurbish printer.

Allen Craft
how can this be?
a re-furbished 660c?
how can you re-furbish something yet not be able to repair it?

Venus
I apologize for the inconvenience cause to you.

Allen Craft
Only apologize for what you are responsible for.
anything else is patronizing

Venus
I hope you can understand as the technology changes every year, new
printers will be launched for customer convenience.

Allen Craft
Customer convenience would be to service items still in use
Selling me a new product is for SHAREHOLDER PROFITEERING
there is a world of difference, one takes money from my pocket regularly, the other takes it only when
necessary

Venus
I appreciate your feedback, I will put forward this feedback in front
of HP.

Allen Craft
I can take a hint. you want me to go away and buy the new printer.

bye, it's too bad HP will not supply parts at the same level of service
as FORD or General Motors
constant sales are not the only way to generate profits. Good Customer
service generates customer loyalty. Good customer service means
supplying parts for items as long as there is a need.
Granted Ford doesn't make parts for the 1965 mustang anymore, but they
do for the 1993

End of transcript
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess I'll be ripping the stickers off of it and going to Radio Shack . If it can't be fixed, I'll be buying another one.
Damn the New Corporate Business Model.

**** UPDATE*****
Well , I just got "the call" from repair central.
It'll be $94.00 for a refurbished 5100 series. I declined it, as I've purchased a 1350 flatbed scanner / copier / printer. I got it at Best Buy for $123.00 plus a $20.00 gift card. So the net price was $100.00 for a new printer. I really like this one, it's about 3or4x as fast and the quzlity is awesome, even with plain paper.
Anyway, It's coming back and I'll probably eBay it or something. If anyone here wants it, PM me.

Man, you stole that printer. I bought my 660Cse in November of 1995 and it was $400.
Got it at CompUSA when I didn't know any better.

Still running and gets used every day.

Yeah, I had that same problem too, when I switched to Win2K pro.
What I do is clean it with the lappy which only has Win98 on it.

you gotta go office space on it. tape you beating the crap out of it and post it here. then give it a proper burial. my choice would be the way vikings were buried. a sailboat with a pyre in it burning as it sailed away.

It seems that old printers seem to last for so much longer than new ones do.

*Uses a HP Deskjet 4C both at home and at work, and a Brother H1020 at school*

My 660Cse from x-mas 1995 still works AFAIK, but I stopped using it in June because it clanked like an old steam locomotive and that != getting along w/ my sleeping roommate, so I got a shiny new laser.

I will give HP credit though, the thing was a trooper.

Did you try lubricating that chrome plated rod that the ink cartridges slide on?

My 660c never quite worked right two or three years after I bought it - could never get it to print clear text without lines running through everything. Finally upgraded to a 970c and this thing has been a huge POS - the color on it hasn't worked properly in years. Definetly buying Canon next time!

I still have mine as well. Works great. I do have an HP all-in-one (mainly for the copier function) but I think the ink works out to be more expensive. I also have bought a Sony dye-sub printer but it seems to be on the fritz.

I paid $220 for that printer back in '98 I think.

Those lines mean it needs a cleaning. Check HPs site and see if they still have cleaning instructions. Also, they used to furnish a cleaning kit free of charge. Check that out.

I've noticed that the newer HP's are not as good as the older onese. My sister-in-law bought an HP5200 or something like that. It crapped out on her in less than a year with just light to moderate usage. I told her to buy a Canon for her next printer.
