I have a problem with Ubuntu and Kubuntu 9.10 and even the previous version where in the middle of installation it says it can't find or read a particular file. I tried installing several times and the interesting thing is it's a different file it can't find each time. Anyone else experienced this? My disks are the ones I ordered from Ubuntu.

In Windows, that kind of random file error in an install is usually caused by failing memory.

Do the boot disks not have a 'check disk for errors' option? I seem to remember that they do. Run that, and if it passes, use the memory test that's also on the disk.

If its a differnt file everytime its probably either the memory or the drive itself.

Memory test passed. Disk Check passed. I was able to install with the DVD download. I'm still leaning towards the pressed copies are the problem.

It would be a failing/crappy disk drive, or hard drive.

When installing ubuntu to really slow hard drives (usually some of the crappier solid state disks), I've noticed it will time out on certain files while installing and the installation fails.
