today was one of the hottest days of the year so far where i live
ambient temps were prob around 85f or so
i noticed my cpu hit 77c on air with 1.5v
it idles barely under 70c

talk about heat
hahaha

yeah tell me about it
I just had to reboot and lower vcore/clock
it started throwing up textures for a game my gf was playing hours ago and i couldn't read anything on the screen haha

i backed the voltage down to 1.42v and the fsb to 225 from 230
my load temps are now my previous idle temps about 68c :)

looks like i will sell this cpu if i can't get watercooling soon :)

My friend mentioned to me this morning on the phone his Prescott (which has now been rid of) hovered around 80c.

that's insane
watercooling is almost a must if you plan to do any overclocking with these prescotts
my psu also went over 50c today

geez it's gonna be way too hot this summer

Up til two days ago it was in the mid 80s here in Va too. My Barton and my wife's 1.4GHz Tbird both stayed well under 50C @load. I was worried about her Tbird, the 1.4GHz chips are hot stuff!

>You live in Arizona or something?

Pretty soon those of us living in Phx will be wishing it was a nice cool 85F. We'll be topping that by 25-30F. :Q

Imagine a desktop prescott on a mobile on your lap.:Q

I had a Tbird 1GHZ which got up to 70C with a cheap TT Volcano 5, those were the days.:)

Yeah, you should definitely go for watercooling if you wanna OC and maintain the higher frequency. With the first generation Koolance Exos watercooling kit, I have both my Prescott and 9800Pro OC'ed.

The idle is around 32-33 C and full load is aroun 36-37 C.

Before I added the GPU block to the circuit, my idle was 28-29 C and load was around 30-33 C. So, having both a GPU and CPU block will lower the OC potential of both components. You can try to alleviate this problem by using a coolant additive like Redline Oil's Waterwetter. I put 60% Koolance liquid + 40% Waterwetter and it seems to have dropped temps about 2-3 C.

BTW: I have AC in my room hovering around 73 F. Souther California weather was really hot today.

The rumor on the web is that ABIT boards can show temps higher than reality, but if you're idling at over 68º don't expect your processor to last very long. Intel says the maximum operating temp is at 68 - meaning you can run it at that temperature constantly.

Also, if ambient temp is 85ºF...you're in trouble overclocking without some sort of liquid unit.

too bad he is getting bad readings. at 80C that cpu would be dead in a heartbeat.

btw, the abit board in this thread gives temps about 10°C higher than they really are

I had a 1.4 thunderbird which was pushing 75c for over 2 years b4 i sold it, that was the actual temp. Never had any problems with it, except couldn't overclock by more than ~2mhz lol. I guess those old thunderbirds were made of stronger stuff than the prescott if it realy is expeced to die at much over 68.

The real question concerning abit temps and there possible correctness should be at 77c did the computer restart, freeze, or start to throttle (get very lethargic)????

Good lord, if it gets any hotter just whip out some marshmallows and a stick, crack open your case and start making smores! Haha...Intel's Prescott powers next generation of microwaves!

my northwood ran under 50c most the time on the same motherboard, when overclocked to 2.7ghz+ with 1.66v+

i'm in the process of building a better nicer cooling system now :)

just got me a refridgerator unit, i'm gonna study up on that and see how far i can take it

i might also end up getting a P4 waterblock since my athlon one don't fit
but the only prob with this is the cooling system (with pelts) pulls more juice than the computer itself

if anything i'm making this thing subzero, and i plan to use as little power as possible to do it

i'll keep ya all updated :)

Heh, maybe there's a reason why you go through a fair amount of hardware, whether it be by you like stabbing the mobo with a screwdriver, or buying a Prescott ;)

No wonder we're having a heat wave out here in Southern California, it's all those overclocked Prescotts....

Thermal throttling.
