Yeah, im going to build a new a64 939 system this week, but i have one thing im debating on, the video card. Since the next gen of cards are just coming out, i am debating what to do. Should i buy an x800xl and just stick with that? Or should i wait and get the mid range 7800 card because it will most likely beat the pants off the x800xl. What would you do in my situation. Buy the x800xl, or wait for the 7800 and buy some crappy pci-e (x300se prolly) in the meantime.

Thats what I would do. I want a new video card, but I can wait a few months for the newer cards (depending on their price) or much cheaper 6800GT's and X800Xl's.

Yeah, any recommendations on a card that will last me until then that is relatively cheap?

I'd get a 6600GT and sell it when you get your new one. There are some deals out there on them now.

$159.00

If you don't want to game much until then, just get a X300

how about this? if you are thinking of getting a nv card when the 7800 line expands you can use the evga step up program and get full retail back after 90 days.

there are 2 things to consider though. first, nobody knows when nv will add more cards and secondly, you are locked into trading in for an evga at full msrp. not a terrible thing as evga makes good cards and has great support but the msrp will never leave (that i've seen) nvs msrp. for instance a 6600gt agp bought through evga right now is $220 or something.

of course, you basically get a 6800gt pci-e for loan for 3 months. i'm doing it now with my 6600gt. try selling one of those for $184 now a days :p if i used my 6800gt i'd stilll get back the 360 i paid for it but i think i'll use that in my sons system.

If I were building today, I would go with the 7800, which will let you play games for the next couple of years. If you upgrade on a shorter cycle and want to wait for the R520, the X800XL or 6800GT is also an option.
