My Porsche 944 is alive and running!

Rebuild head ported and polished (myself), all belts, water pump, thermostat, rebuilt injectors, plug cables, vacuum lines, new fuel pump and filter. I though I'd have it working last week, but dead fuel pump and rusted lines hung me up for a couple days. Finally got the last piece in and she runs like tom cruise from common sense 🙂

Ban for pics of motor but not of whole car. 😛 Sweet looking motor BTW.

I loved 944's. My father-in-law had one that I got to drive just once before he unloaded it. Man it was a kick in the pants to drive.

Very nice! You'll have a lot of fun with that little car. And the bonus is that it will get 28-30 mpg on the freeway. 🙂

30mpg? Not with the 3speed auto unless 45mph is your idea of freeway speed. 😉

But yea I liked the 944 as well, made me a good amount of money when I was a auto tech.

If I got one i would pull the motor and drop in a chevy. A lot did the 350 but i always thought about a 4.3L setup. Keep the weight down even more.
But i searched for a good 914 beofre i got my 75 V8 Monza. I like weird uncommon cars so the likes of a 914, Monza, Opel GT, etc... are cool to me.

Funy you should mention that, my brother wanted me to get him a GT that was for sale locally, but I could never get ahold of the seller.

IMO belts should be illegal to put on ANY motor, its almost like a computer and electronic makers installing software that makes thier product you bought quit working after xxx period of time or use, forcing you bring it in and get the clock reset. They can easily use a chain, but why do that when you can use a belt instead forcing anyone who bought the car to bring it in and get the belt changed handing money over to them at a predetermined time. Every car with a belt at some point or another needs to have it changed no matter what, and then they punish you for driving your car till it breaks by making sure it does more damage to the motor, meaning, possible more money to them in repairs, or the chance you may buy another car off their car lot when you find out the bill to fix is now in the thousands.

So tell me, does that sound right? Why is it against the law for everyone else, BUT THE AUTO MAKERS, to do such a thing? Cannot tell me its cost effective to just make it so it uses a chain, then a belt, for I am sure ANYONE would gladly pay the extra $100 on the cost of the car knowing it had a chain, then knowing at 60K when there is no warranty, and they consider a belt replacement a wearable item not covered by any warranty, not even extended, they will have to get it changed costing them over $1000 to do it, or more then that in most cases.

But anyway, i agree, ban for you for showing just the motor and not the car, and the motor does look great, good for you doing it yourself. Any reason as to why it took 3 years though?

Chains don't last forever... many of them stretch and should be replaced by 150,000... but on the other hand, they probably won't break over the life of the vehicle.

Its also usually more difficult to replace a chain than a belt.

They only use belts as they make the engine quieter and maybe a little less expensive to build. Me I prefer a timing chain.
Looks pretty good. I would take some time to route some wires and cables nice and neat and away from the heat or intake plenum.

Well if they ALL had timing chains it wouldn't be long before they make you come in at 90k mi to change out the POS sprokets on the chain drives.
Someone will always think of a way to bilk people for more cash.

Well, yeah. But I think they made about 4 cars with the automatic. 😛 I was assuming he had the 5-speed.

I guess I worked on all those 4 cars then. Seemed quite a bit of them had Autos when I worked on them. Most were sticks but still quite a bit of autos.

Yes, and we should ban brakes as well! They wear out too! And tires! And clutches!

Chains are noisier. They require a lubrication supply. They transmit greater shock to the valvetrain. Why not just go all the way and require gear drive of the camshafts?

There are also numerous cars with timing belts that are not interference designs. Volvo's Red Block engines, for example. The advantage of interference designs, however, are better economy and more power. I suppose that we should sacrifice power and fuel economy though in order to protect idiots who can't be bothered to maintain their cars.

As far as cost, most cars only cost between $400 and $600 to replace a timing belt. It's a $500 service on my Volvo, for example. There are very, very few cars where it's over $1000. Not even the 944 is over $1000 for the timing belt. The front-of-engine service runs about $700 for new belts, rollers and seals. The clutch on the 944, however...

From what I saw in his blog pics, he does have the 5 speed.
