According to SMART monitoring, hard drive failure is imminent.

I want to RMA the drive, but when I run maxtor's diagnostic utility it doesn't even see the drive (yet I'm still using it right now).

Any ideas?

the drive will die sooner or later... better do at least a good backup of it if you don't intend on sencing it in RMA now
I had a drive at work that did that and it took 4 months for it to die

Yeah, thank God I have a CD-RW drive. If my drive had failed without my having backed up the data, I would have been screwed.

Hopefully I can RMA the drive and transfer almost everything over to the new drive before sending in the defective one.

It seems hard drives are less reliable these days from my perspective. I have an ancient 486dx2/50 and a p200, both of which still have their original functioning hard drives. But both mine and my former roommate's new hard drives have died in the past 4 month.

Oh well...

Thanks for the input!
