My poor dog

Anyone have a dog that goes through this or previosly?

From what I understand, it may be genetic. Our local vet says it could be related to hormonal issues (our dog has had two false pregnancies).

I was so alarmed and afraid lastnight when our little chihuahua had another seizure. This one lasted from about 10:15 pm till about 11:30 pm and stopped after the emergency vet gave her some valium.

Now supposedly it is not painful during a seizure, but damn, it sure in the hell looks like it. I just think to myself, "poor thing".. I would hate to have to go through something like that.

My parents dog has siezures every now and then. THe first time it happened it was super scarey but we got used to them after a while. She may have one every week or two now and the last about 15 minutes. They look really bad and it's freaky when it happens but the dog doesn't seem to remember them. After she has one she acts fatigued but she doesn't appear to be distressed. An hour after she has one she is back to normal. Also remember a dog having a siezure isn't a big thing to the dog, it more of a big thing to you.

Thats what is shocking to me about this. The vet told us they are in no pain and from me doing some reading they are unconscious during the middle stage of a seizure.

Our dog is a little over three years old. Her first episode was only about a year ago. She didn't have another one until just recently in the first part of November. Now, she had her third one lastnight. For the three seperate incidents, each episode increases in intensity and lasts much longer than the previous time. Thats why we took her to the emergency vet lastnight. This morning she was discharged and she is now down at our local vet.
I just hope the seizures don't become more frequent and intensify more and more.
From what I've researched, if the middle stages of a seizure last longer than five minutes, brain damage can occur.

Did your dog get prescribed Phenobarbital? They gave our dog a dose of that this morning and mentioned that we may have to get a prescription of that for her. Crazy stuff!

My 16 year old German Sherpard/Border Collie mix has epilepsy. It first manifested when she was about 3 years old and the first time it happened I didnt panic as I have seen this before (used to work in a pet shop long ago). She would normally get a seizure 4 time a year. She would drop to the floor, lose all control of her bladder and bowels and drool like a gallon. All I can do is make sure she didnt hurt herself and keep her warm and within a half hour she would just snap out of it. It always happened late at night. She hasnt had a seizure in over a year but now she has altzheimers. The vet said a dog her size usually do not live to be over 14 or so and she is now approaching 17. So now she is on some med for the altzheimer and another med for her hips. She is about 80lbs so there is a lot of weight on her hind legs and the muscles are very atrophied. But she is still alive and kicking and the meds have help her a lot. Before the meds, she would walk around in a stupor, as if she didnt know where she was, classic altzheimer behavior. But I am glad the seizures have stopped. Its is not painful for them unless they flop around and bag into the wall or something, and when they snap out of it they dont even know it happened.

Well, isn't that a coincedence. Our chihuahua has her seizures at times when the vet isn't open either! 🙂 Either around 10 at night or six in the morning. Piss poor timing 😛

If this phenobarbital stuff will control her seizures, then I'll be all for it. I don't want to see her conditions get worse.
