My main rig just died the other night. Not good for a variety of reasons.
One being that my wife is going back to school and has all of her work saved on the HD. I need to get all of her papers off for class Monday.
With the Bears playing Sunday (and my plan of being super drunk), that leaves me today and tomorrow to get it up and running again.
I think the mobo shot craps on me. I'd love to shop online to get the best deal for a mobo/cpu replacement, but I just don't have the time. So, off to Fry's I go. I saw the hot deals t hread about the ECS combo Fry's has and how the BIOS is fubar'd. I would have been beyond ticked if I bought it and couldn't get it up and running since it is a good 40 minute drive for me.

Oh well. 2007 is off to a nice start.

Dead: Chaintech VNF3-250 with a A64 1800+ (that ran at 2.4g)

I did try a backup power source and no go. Pulled the RAM and used backups that I know work. All in all, everything leads to the mobo having died. The southbridge heatsink was really hot to the touch when I got home from work (have no idea how long it had been down).
 
Yank the drive, pop into an external USB drive case, plug into backup PC and off ya go watch the game.

Assuming you have another working box around, this is the quickest, cheapest way to go. $20 and 10 min should about do it. Then it's off to BeerWingsPizza-land. 🙂
 
Thanks for the advice. I might just do that and then when I get my bonus in March I can go ahead and rebuild a better one.

just out of interest, what exactly are the bears? some yankee baseball team? it's summer, so i assume you're not playing gridiron 😉

well he did say this is his main rig. i assume he has others? why not just plop the drive into another and get what you need off it, let her use that pc and then order your parts online?
 
The only one I have running now is my laptop.
I have an old ECS mobo with an athlon 1.33 collecting dust. I guess I could get that up and running if necessary.

I think I will go with the HD enclosure so my wife can get all of her assignments off it, and then take my time to rebuild by getting a new mobo and cpu online. I might go with a socket 939 since I can use my memory (1 gb). That should only set me back about $130.

IDK about all the comments on the ECS deal, but I bought the package you're talking about for a mame box and it works like a charm. Of course, I'm not pushint it, and running linux...
 
The problem is I don't know if it really is the mobo or cpu that crapped out. It's just a guess based on swapping out the powersource and memory.
It is going to turn into a $130 experiment after I confirm the hard drive still functions.
