My poor car...

Well, today has been an eventful day.

As the topic summary indicates, I got into an accident about 6 hours ago (around 3pm Central time). I was driving several friends over to the other side of town so we could eat at a Chinese buffet. It happened when we were literally less than a block away.

I was under a bridge, about to turn left onto the westbound access road (of Loop 1604 near Stone Oak Parkway in San Antonio, in case anyone knows where that is). Then suddenly I felt a forceful hit from behind which sent me through the interection - luckily my light was green so there wasn't any cross traffic; and luckily I hadn't actually turned the steering wheel yet, otherwise I'd have been sent into the cars on the opposing side of the street.

It took me a second to realize what had just happened, then I asked everyone if they were alright, etc. As I was pulling over into the parking lot that was right there, I noticed that the faceplate for my CD player had flown right off, and the glove compartment had popped open and spilled its contents on the floor - the latch was broken. Yay.

It didn't "feel" right either, and as I got out of the car I noticed that it was indeed riding lower than normal in the back. So I walk around to the back, and see the damage. "Shiiiit." Massive trunk damage, and as I found out a few minutes later, the rear right door would no longer open either.

The driver of the other car, a 2003 Jeep Liberty, did pull over too and said "Hey...sorry about that." His English wasn't all that great either, and I certainly wasn't feeling up to trying to speak to him in Spanish. So one of my friends called the police, and a woman drove up to where we were in the parking lot, telling me that she'd seen the whole thing, and gave me her contact information if I needed to use her as a witness. I wrote it down, thanked her, and she then left (I assume she had somewhere to be).

So at this point I'm just kind of waiting around, not knowing what exactly to do (except writing down the vehicle information of the other driver, just in case he were to run off or something). He comes up to me and said, "So...do you want to wait for the police?" - To which I responded "Yes."

So the officer showed up after a little while, asked us what happened, asked us for our licenses and insurance papers, and begins to write the report. He got up out of the car to survey the damage to both cars (the other didn't seem to have sustained nearly as much damage as mine did, which I assume is because his was sitting a good bit higher up than my 1992 Pontiac Bonneville). He finishes up his report, then writes down our information (so the other driver and I could each have the other's), and tells us to each call our insurance companies and tell them what happened, referencing the police report number.

I'm assuming I did all that I was supposed to, but not having had first-hand experience before today, of course I can't be sure. In any case, I later called my insurance company and explained to them what happened, gave them all the information I had, and was told I'd be contacted by an adjuster within 24-48 business hours. Obviously I'm glad that none of us seems to be hurt, but it's just such a pain in the ass to have had this happen less than two weeks before I'm going to be moving back up to school. I don't know what the hell the other driver was doing either, because I didn't hear screeching brakes or anything - I just felt the impact. I don't know how fast he was going either, but I'd guess somewhere between 30-40mph. It probably would have been worse too if I hadn't already taken my foot off the brakes and begun to accelerate a little.

In any case, I realize too that this wouldn't be a proper ATOT thread without pics, so here is the damage:

If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading - I suppose I just needed to vent.

your poor Bonnie 🙁 I used to drive an 87 Bonnie and I loved that car. Hopefully she'll make it through this ordeal.

Oh, and glad you're uninjured too 😛

Ha, ha, the other driver is going to deny everything. 😀

and then get nailed. everythings onthe police report. its also pretty hard to deny a rearending.

Of course the proper course of action is for everyone in the car to grab your necks and roll around the the pavement as if you are writhing in pain. It never hurts to grab the lower back for effect.

Insist that you are having chest pains and demand to be transported to the local hospital for observation.

Sue the other party and retire early claiming permanent disability.

Yes, the impact made me sick of hepatitis 😛
Oh, and I need some dental work because of some cavities... errr... as a result of the accident...

Glad you are OK, iron is much less important.

ooohhh, the poor car 🙁

Do see your MD. I've been in accidents where I feel fine right then but have catch in my neck for a while (like months) afterwards.

And no, I didn't sue 😉

From the pic, that jeep tagged you pretty well. Glad that you're OK.

I lost control of my Mazda 626gt in the wet on a corner. Turned it into a Banana!! mother outlaw was in the car behind. I thought I was gonna die, the way she came running up. Luckily there were no injuries, during or after the crash.
you guys were really lucky with the lights, and no oncoming traffic.

I hate to say it, but Blue book is pretty low, even though it's still a really nice car. 99% chance it's going to be totalled. Too bad, since it looked like it was a great ride!

You're probably right, and after seeing the damage and thinking about it, I came to a similar conclusion myself. I went in to a body shop today for an estimate, and it was worse than I could have ever imagined...the total for parts and labor that they quoted me at was $6102.48. Considering the car is worth a third of that, I don't see how they won't just total the thing. And yes, it was a nice car, I liked it very much. If it does come to my having to replace it (which at this point I am pretty much expecting), I'm thinking about replacing it with the same thing, except a few years newer.

I do have a question though - I realize I should take my audio stuff out (head unit and a few speakers) and replace it with the stock crap if they're going to total it, but should I do that now or does it really matter?

If the damage made it all the way up to a rear door, you are probably looking at a total. I have a '97 Maxima that got rear-ended a little over a month ago and a little damage made it up to the rear quarter panel and it was close to being a total. The appraiser is probably going to lift up the mat in your trunk and say something to the effect of "hoo boy"

I got a nasty lick, but it was from a Chevy '03 Cavalier, not a Jeep Liberty. Should have my car back on Monday (finally).

You are going to be sore in the neck/shoulder/back area for the next few days, possibly even a week. It took a day or two for mine to start, but it was probably the worst two days after the accident. Then I had a nagging little pain when I turned my head to the right for a while, but it all got better.

Hope you're OK, but if the pain is bad enough or lasts longer than you think it should see a doctor.

If they're going to total it, strip it of what you want. They don't care if there's no stereo or speakers. Some shop will buy it for 2k or so, fix it up, and sell it for 3-4k to a schmuck who wants a car, but can't afford one, so they'll get one with w salvaged title.

I got hit like that a few months ago. Very similar, cept i was stopped at cunstruction and the moron who hit me was doing 50. Everyone was fine, but It was a crazy impact, totalled my car. I still remember how it felt to this day. To give you an idea, I was wearing a hat at the time. After awhile, i noticed my hat was gone. While we waited for the police, I looked around for my hat... found it by the window above the back seat... crazy stuff.

You did good waiting for the police. With a police report, you're insurance co. shouldn't give you any trouble as you definatly weren't at fault.

Wait until they say it is totaled and make the FIRST offer, which you will turn down. But make sure you go to http://www.traderonline.com and print out the 5-10 highest priced cars that match yours (year, make, and model). Then when they make some unholy low ball offer give them a copy of those and tell them you want 10-20% above the average of those 5-10 cars. Don?t say it like that but do the math yourself and say I want XXXX to settle the auto claim, here are cars like mine that are for sale right now in this area. Then their 2nd offer will be something much better that you and they can agree with.

But it looks like you kept it up really well, paint looks good, no major damage other then the accidnet, etc... but yea go ahead and start looking for another car. And don;t take anything out/off the car until they look at it.

A bit of advice: if the interior of your car is a little dirty, go ahead and clean it up before the appraiser looks at it. My step-dad is an insurance appraiser, and from what I can tell he's always willing to help people out a little more when he sees that they've taken excellent care of it.

Appearances count. Spend a couple of bucks to vacuum up the floormats and seats, and wipe a wet rag over the interior. Even if though it's likely a total, it can make a difference.
