I have a Plextor Premium that won't burn CD's! The disc spins like it's going to burn, and then nothing. When I check the task manager it says "not responding" Also, the software seems to be running extremely slow, like when I try to add music tracks, or data to a new CD, it takes forever, and sometimes it does not add the data at all. It came pre-installed with my computer. I tried to update the software, but when I tried, the installer said it had to cancel, and after repeated attempts, it still would not install the update. I have never been able to burn anything with the Plexwriter Premium drive, and I have updated the firmware. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the writing software (Roxio Easy CD CReator Basic) which comes with the drive. I don't know what else to do, please help!

Have you disabled the Windows writing software? I'm running Record Now Max; I have to disable windows generic drivers and enable record now max's drivers. To do it I do under:

Under My Computer > Right Click CDRW drive > Properties > Recording > Disable recording on this drive.

After reinsatlling the software, did you apply the latest update?

Also, you might want to consider trying a different piece of software, try the nero demo and see what happens.

I tried to apply the latest update, but it failed to execute and update after I downloaded the latest. Also, why wouldn't the software that comes bundled with the drive not work? I'm confused. This is supposed to be a cutting edge system, and I have been having nothing but trouble with it.

What kind of system is it? What type of discs are you using? Just because it is a cutting edge system doesn't mean it can't get a virus or a bad install of windows.

How do you know if it's a bad install? Is there anyway to fix it? What causes a bad install? I bought the system from "Harddrive.com" and they supposedly thoroughly tested it before it shipped. Anyway, the system is:

XP Pro
p4 3c
Gigabyte GA-8KNXP
1 GB Corsair XMS 400mhz
2 wd raptors in RAID 0
1 Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP 180 GB for mass storage
Plexwriter Premium
Toshiba DVD ROM Drive
Sony DRU 510-A
1.44 MB Floppy
Antec true 480 power supply
Standard Heatsink/fan
Audigy 2 soundcard
Radeon 9600 Pro

My definition of a bad install is software that doesn't work properly. Your computer seems to meet that definition. Many times the ghost image companies use can get mixed up with hardware it is not made for. I would recommend you try another cd burning program (nero) and see if that works. That way, you will know whether or not your hardware is functioning properly.

Did the burner ever work before? It is entirely possible you have a bad burner, maybe they even gave you a refurb, who knows. You didnt mention if you have tried different media, that would be your first thing to check. Try a cdr, put a small file on it, make sure the session is closed and see if you can read it.

The only media I tried is cdr, and the burner never worked before. Could it be true for both systems with identical components that they both would not work? When I ordered the system, I ordered two of these:

XP Pro
p4 3c
Gigabyte GA-8KNXP
1 GB Corsair XMS 400mhz
2 wd raptors in RAID 0
1 Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP 180 GB for mass storage
Plexwriter Premium
Toshiba DVD ROM Drive
Sony DRU 510-A
1.44 MB Floppy
Antec true 480 power supply
Standard Heatsink/fan
Audigy 2 soundcard
Radeon 9600 Pro

I would say you should try some of the things is suggested. Since you have two systems, you might consider swapping the drives to see if it is a drive problem. And yes, a ghost can go bad in the loading process.

First thing I will try is the nero demo. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks a lot for all your help!

When I download Nero 6, do you have to download all three packages? I only want to try the burning portion of it, not all the other stuff that comes along with it.
