My Plan to Save the Country (What's Yours? Could be fun...)

Obviously things are not working too well, so I propose a new plan!

Every 4 years, a different party gets to hold the Presidential office. Since the Democrats had their turn last time, the Republicans should get a turn this time. The Greens and Libertarians can roll the dice or draw straws to see who is next.

Elections will no longer be about parties campaigning, but the best of the best each party has to offer. It would be Gore against Bradley, McCain against Bush, and so on.

I also think that there should be a reward system for those who do a really good job. If a President earns stars for good behavior, then they get some kind of treat at the end of his term. If he earns checks for bad behavior, then he gets his pension reduced or something.

Doesn't this make a lot more sense than what we have now?

;)

Edit: On a more serious note, I am interested in hearing people's ideas for improvement. Start the conversation, and then be active in making changes!

Hmmm, knowing the strength of your libido, it depends on what you mean...

:D

Sure, as long as you will push me on the swings. ;)

Funny:)

But it would just be 4 years of undoing what the past 4 years had done!! And so the cycle would repeat.

I refuse to have "sloppy seconds" so I am willing to file an injunction with the federal courts to stop the process that thebsetMAX has in mind. :D

That will never work, how would you determine what parties could hold office. If this were to happen every person would start a party so they could be president, atleast I would.

What I hope this election will show is that we need to stop using election technology that was invented in the late 1800s. In this day and age we should not be using paper ballots or the old mechanical ballots. The states and counties need to spend some money and update the technolgy that they use. In the less than 20 years that I have been voting I have used three different voting systems, in the same town. I asked about this the last time I voted and they said the reason they kept updating the system was to make it faster and less costly to process all the ballots. As much as I'm for states rights I think we need a national standard for election systems.

I agree with you, denali... I'm just teasing.

In my line of work, when things get out of hand like this, I always make the kids take turns. I also use a reward system to help shape the behavior I want in the kids I work with.

This whole thing is just amazing to me! I have to laugh about it, or I will cry. It's not pretty when I cry, so...

I am going to march right up to both Gore and Bush and give them both a sound spanking!

oh, and you can be next, thebestMax. Shux, I'm coming for you, too!

Politics is about power and ego. People believe that they or their "truth" should govern. Although your idea is probably appropriate for some "advanced society", it's not too likely in today's world.
To answer to your question (and I know it was oversimplified) yes, I think it does make more sense than what we have now. But don't forget that the debate, struggle and tension between the two extremes have somehow resulted in something pretty good in what we have now.

LOL, ride525,

I was thinking all good presidents could get a yacht called the "Monkey Business", or maybe a lifetime supply of cigars... any other ideas?

How about we set up full standards of competence for each office. Age, work competence, experience, etc.

Have everyone go into a pool that meets the standards. No political parties !! Then randomly select from the pool by a lotto type drawing.

Any one who serves in office can never hold another office of any type.

For president, for instance.

serves one term, say, 6 yrs.

pay a good salary & benefits.

set Benefits not enough to retire on.

vote at the end of the term.

100% approval >> gets full retirement & bennies

75% approval >> gets a small pension & a plaque & 1/2 bennies

50% approval >> gets a plaque & a handshake

25% approval >> has to pay back any bennies recieved in office

0% approval >> does time in a federal pen

Scale all public offices in the same way.

Most people don't go into politics for money, so a rewards system wouldn't do much good. Money is not an issue for both Bush and Gore, they are both rich. Policitians need better motivation if you want to get the job done. I think we could have motivated Clinton with the threat of castration if he did a poor job in office. I'm almost positive with that kinda threat, Clinton would be working his ass off to make the country a better place.

Isla:

I think we should have the Party Party. You know, the Let's Get Down and Boogie Party! Let's try four years of them.

May I suggest Jimmy Buffet as a sort of laid back "tweener" start? :p

We could move on to the Cobain, Back Street Boys, Mozart, Puff Daddy, etc. Parties.

Politics would really get interesting if, say, Arafat smoked some dope with Cobain's widow.

Who knows? Our way isn't working. :p
