My physics teacher found out he's not getting rehired

And he basically said, "since i dont have to worry about giving the whole class A's i will be very leniant in my grading"

I really feel bad for him, he's a great guy and apparantly he had lots of plans for the course.

Sucks, many teachers are going to be cut in my school as well. As well as sports, and even the length of the school day. We had a second vote (first one was in November) for a tax referendum to help fund our school, but again it didnt pass. So now I can only take 6 classes next year and get out of school early but there are many other electives I would love to take and I think this is horrible. The school wasted so much money on useless crap like a brand new computer lab for-get this-the foreign language department, which has been used all of like 3 times. And other frivolous spending. It's saddening to say the least.

Well at my school, you teach for 3 years then they either re-hire you and give you tenor (sp?), or they let you go. In his case, he was given a fourth probationary year, but asked the administration to make a decision right away. Apparantly they said no because of some conflict he had with another science teacher.

Gotta love faculty beef.

Reminds me of a time, when two teachers at my old high school (one math teacher, another business teacher) were literally punching either other. They both still work there today

Thats the problem with tenure... It can make a bad teacher not only stay teaching, but have weight on hirings and firings of other non-tenured teachers... But on the plus side, it does keep good teachers in schools where they want to teach, so i guess is kinda a double-edged sword...

Ya also, my old geography teacher had an affir with another geography teacher, and she is now divorsed with her then husband and pregnant with the othe geo teacher. (btw both of these teachers are in their 20's, and the girl geo teacher is my friends cousin, thats why i know soo much)

that's truly disappointing. not getting tenure is a problem in universities around the country as well... you see websites all over the place with students pleading that the administration rescind their decisions to disallow tenure.

maybe he'll find a better job elsewhere. too bad he has to start to look. 🙁

LOFL, I've been in more teacher's last classes than I would've thought possible. Even my stone-cold US History teacher warmed up at the end. Prior to my class, her classes were always fast-paced, highly difficult, and graded harshly. For us, since we were her last US History class, she spent most of the time talking about all the wonderful stories she'd had from her travels around the country and sightseeing and stuff. It was like "OMG YES KILLER" awesome. And when we actually did normal work, we dragged it out. ONE assignment, a group presentation on something simple, took a MONTH because she kept interjecting random stories about like, everything we said. It was the most AWESOME thing I've ever seen in my life.

So are STDs. 😛

Yeah it happens in most workplaces, but there's something worse about teachers who are supposed to be role models and such. Oh yeah all the students are still under 18 too.

Politics should not decide tenure, but sadly they often do. If you really want to help him, be sure to write a letter at the end of the semster that he can use for future job aplications (don't mention that he did not get tenure in the letter) and praise his excellent teaching, knowledge, etc. That will both make him feel better and is something he can use in his portfolio when he applies for future academic positions. 😀
