My phone suddenly wont recognize headphones that has no microphone (help?)

For a while now I could use headphones that has no mic without any problems, but recently my phone will not utilize the headphones if its not equipped with a mic, it would just play through the speaker.

I tested my phone on a few of my friends headphones and its 100% confirmed that it will only utilize headphones that's equipped with a mic...

Any advice?

What kind of phone - Android or iPhone? (iAssume you would have said iPhone if it was iPhone, but iWanted to be sure.)
