my personal mission statement

I'm in the process of writing a personal mission statement in the vein suggested by Stephen Covey - heres what I have so far

It is my mission in life to spread love to the people around me.

My ability to spread love is influenced by a number of factors, especially including how I communicate. The aspects of communication include visual ? how I present myself, how I carry myself, the eye contact I make, and especially how I percieve the people around me. It is important that I strive to find the uniqueness of every person that I communicate with, because it is through that uniqueness that I can find love.Aural includes how I speak and how I listen. It is important that my words and my voice is constantly filled with love.

My ability to effectively communicate stems from my control over my mind and body. It important for me to be aware of my thoughts and to develop them. I proactively use the human endowments of self-awareness, free will, imagination, and conscience to develop my thoughts around my mission to spread love.

As I write this I realize how drastically I want to change my life....

And of all the missions in life, why to spread love? Why THAT one?

Because I've realized that love is the one thing that I value above everything else. It has the most meaning in the world for me. I've discovered that by sharing love, the love I feel inside me grows.

I'm not really familiar with Stephen Covey (I know what he wrote, but haven't read it); however, I think the most important thing behind the mission statement is that you believe it. Do you?

BTW, don't expect too many heartening answers here. The cynics, like evil Gremlins, come out after midnight. Don't give them water.

well, basically you're making yourself presentable and a good speaker in order to spread your message, so thats good. for the rest of it... get rid of the flowery language and you'd probably make it clearer for yourself.

A mission statement is what I organize my life around - it is ideally the basis for all the things that I do. Having a mission statement reveals what is most important to me, thus enabling my to organize my goals and my actions around that mission statement. By focusing on the things that are important to me, I become an 'efficient' person(you've probably heard of the book "the seven habits of higly effective people). Of course, being efficient means doing things that matter most. Writing a mission statement helps me clarify what matters most.

my suggestion.. dont worry about existing for something, and just exist.

My mission statement (I like to call it my Twofold Path of Sweetness, borrowing from Buddhism) is as follows:

1. Continue to kick ass.
2. Endeavor to kick more ass.

Once you look past it's inherent stupidity, it works pretty well.

I'm not worried about existing for something - I'm excited to exist for something. Frankly, I'm not happy with my life right now, and changing it is something that matters to me and is important. Worry is not important.

to me it means more to be able to just change the bad parts of your life.. and look back at them in a few years and say "wow, i did a good job with myself" instead of trying to meet goals on paper

Looked at with a critical eye, the first sentence is your "mission statement"; the rest of your text is filler. While your ability to effectively communicate may stem from your control over mind and body, what you lack is control over your prose; meaning is lost when the words become more important than the message.

One could say thats important in anything we do. Look past the stupidity of it, and be happy.

What I was trying to do with 'the rest' was define what the first sentence meant, and also say more specifically how I will go about implementing my mission. I think I need to rethink/clarify the entire statement though. This is rather difficult to write, both intelletually and emotionally.

What is love and how does it spread? Does it spread like butter (with a knife), like a contagion, with specific vectors like STDs or ebola, or like molds, infesting their way into rotten food? Would others want your love spread all over them, infesting open sores and potentially causing infection? Or is love pure (distilled), and tasteless; the same for everyone?

One must define the boundaries of the box before one can think outside of it.
